Abstract While temperature fluctuations pose significant challenges to the nervous system, many vital neuronal systems in poikilothermic animals function over a broad range. Using gastric mill pattern generator Jonah crab, we previously demonstrated that temperature-induced increases leak conductance disrupt and neuropeptide modulation provides thermal protection. Here, show also robustness Dungeness Green crabs. Like crabs, higher temperatures increased both species’ pattern-generating neuron LG terminated rhythmic activity. Likewise, increasing descending modulatory projection activity or transmitter application rescued rhythms at elevated temperatures. However, decreasing input resistance using dynamic clamp only restored rhythm half of experiments. Thus, species, demonstrating neuropeptide-mediated compensation is not limited one although underlying cellular mechanisms may be distinct. Summary statement This study shows release from neurons plays crucial role maintaining circuit across crustacean species.
