Bambara groundnut (BGN) fits the bill when it comes to an acceptable level of nutrient and mineral composition. BGN is a balanced food that can help eradicate nutritional insecurity if incorporated into major system. However, there large degree variation in composition antinutritional factors among accessions. Here, we show variability antinutrient components such as percentage ash, moisture, protein, fat, tryptophan, tannin, phytate contents seeds 95 accessions BGN. Data were subjected analysis variance (ANOVA), followed by correlation principal component analysis. Clustering was done relatedness between response various traits. A high heterogeneity observed for traits studied. PC1 PC2 41.2% total variations. Cluster grouped four main clusters. This study able confirm diversity nutrients antinutrients previously reported The results this are expected aid identifying parent lines improved breeding programs.

Orphan crops are indigenous and invariably grown by small marginal farmers under subsistence farming systems. These crops, which common widely accepted local farmers, highly rich in nutritional profile, good for medicinal purposes, well adapted to suboptimal growing conditions. However, these have suffered neglect abandonment from the scientific community because of very low or no investments research genetic improvement. A plausible reason this is that not traded internationally at a rate comparable major food such as wheat, rice, maize. Furthermore, environments poor soils characterized extreme weather conditions heat, erratic rainfall, water deficit, soil salinity, among others. With more frequent climatic events continued land degradation, orphan beginning receive renewed attention alternative dietary diversification and, extension, across globe. Increased awareness health also contributor revived accorded crops. Thus, introduction, evaluation, adaptation outstanding varieties will contribute only sustained production but improved nutrition environments. In review article, concept vis-à-vis marginality security defined few We examined recent advances involving potential within context harsh Recent genomics coupled with molecular breeding play pivotal role improving help developing sustainable concluded presenting roadmap future engagement policy framework recommendations aimed facilitating enhancing adoption agriculturally

As a fundamental pillar of food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), ensuring seed is critical to empowering farmers cultivating and livestock feed, thereby fostering income generation from agricultural outputs. Among the crops cultivated by smallholders, legumes have potential deliver multifaceted benefits. Legumes are nutrient-dense enhance soil health through their nitrogen-fixing qualities. However, many instances, development, release, supply improved legume varieties insufficient meet needs smallholder SSA. Here, we systematically reviewed literature (i) identify categorize existing systems, (ii) map available (iii) barriers hindering adoption various varieties, (iv) strategies opportunities for strengthening systems Our results demonstrate coexistence formal informal within chains SSA, each employing unique distribution channels. Smallholders, however, shown predominantly depend on system source most seeds except commercially varieties. We also identified diverse range smallholders region, with having varying trait preferences based crop type gender. Notably, high yield abiotic stress tolerance were preferred traits. The these influenced factors, including lack timely access adequate quantities system, costs, limited information new highlighted that utilizing had positive effect leading welfare, security, dietary diversity, income. conclude effective scaling SSA contingent upon presence supportive policy frameworks well-established technical support structures.

Adopting underutilized legumes in tackling food security is essential, especially this era of climate change. Underutilized are embedded with inherent potentials such as the ability to survive extreme conditions (such temperature, drought, pH, saline, etc.), high nitrogen-fixing potential, weed and disease control ability, nutrient status. can improve yield companion crops an intercropping system a subsequent crop (due their residual effects). They possess symbiotic non-symbiotic organisms nodules, also have different bulk soil, rhizoplanes rhizosphere, which fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus or produce exudates help improving plant growth. Also, they contain some phytochemicals, including alkaloids, saponin, amino acids, organic inorganic minerals, compounds that human health prevent diseases. Hence, review discusses current status, role, challenges prospects security.

Poverty, food, and nutrition insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have become major concerns recent times. The effects of climate change, drought, unpredictable rainfall patterns threaten food production sustainable agriculture. More so, insurgency, youth restiveness, politico-economic instability amidst a burgeoning population requiring sufficient healthy diet remain front-burner issues the region. Overdependence on only few staple crops is increasingly promoting near extinction many crops, especially orphan legumes, which possess immense potentials as protein nutritional security crops. are declining yield partly to their inability adapt continuously changing climatic conditions. Remarkably, legumes climate-smart with enormous agronomic features foster livelihood. Research efforts these not attained reasonable comparative status most commercial Though research organizations scientists made promote improvement utilization there still more be done. These legumes' vast genetic resources economic utility grossly under-exploited, but values promising impacts immeasurable. Given United Nations development goals (SDGs) zero hunger, improved nutrition, health, agriculture, need introduce into systems SSA other poverty-prone regions world now compelling than ever. This review unveils inherent needing focus for exploitation viz-a-viz cultivation, commercialization, social acceptance. this article discusses some nutraceutical global adaptability, modern plant breeding strategies that could deployed develop superior phenotypes enrich landraces. Advanced omics technologies, speed breeding, well application genome editing techniques, significantly enhance useful underutilized legumes. Efforts regard challenges approaches were also discussed.

Adzuki beans are grown in several countries around the world and widely popular Asia, where they often prepared various food forms. rich starch, their proteins contain a balanced variety of amino acids with high lysine content, making up for lack protein content cereals daily diet. Therefore, research on adzuki development products have broad prospects development. The protein, fat, polysaccharide, polyphenol contents compositions vary greatly among different varieties. processing characteristic components beans, such as isolated heated flavor, reported view to further promote bean foods. In addition favorable edibility, human health benefits include antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties. Furtherly, extracts positive effects prevention treatment diseases, including diabetes, diabetes-induced kidney disease or damage, obesity, high-fat-induced cognitive decline. This also makes case dual use medicine contributes promotion healthy, edible legume.

Biplot analysis has emerged as a crucial statistical method in plant breeding and agricultural research. The objective of this research was to identify the best-performing genotype(s) for environments three distinct regions Nigeria while also examining characteristics magnitude genotype–environment interaction (GEI) effects on yield Bambara groundnut (BGN). study conducted Ibadan, Ikenne, Mokwa, utilizing sample 30 accessions. BGN found be significantly affected by accessions, environment, their through combined variance, with p-value < 0.001. Biplots were utilized demonstrate pattern components, specifically genotype’s main effect (GEI). initial two principal components elucidated complete variance GGE model, encompassing both genetic genotype-by-environment (PC1 = 87.81%, PC2 12.19%). accessions that exhibited superior performance each respective determined “which-won-where” polygon, identified TVSu-2223, TVSu-2236, TVSu-2240, TVSu-2249 Mokwa; TVSu-2214 Ikenne; TVSu-2188 Ibadan. TVSu-2207 TVSu-2199 stability all environments, whereas TVSu-2226, TVSu-2249, TVSu-2209, TVSu-2184, TVSu-2204, TVSu-2236 demonstrated adaptability. In addition, TVSu-2240 TVSu-2283 stable adaptable environments. chosen have been suggested suitable parental lines programs aimed at enhancing grain agro-ecological zones evaluated. This study’s findings adaptability across selected Nigeria, suggesting specific can serve enhance yield, thereby holding promise improving food security.
