Adopting underutilized legumes in tackling food security is essential, especially this era of climate change. Underutilized are embedded with inherent potentials such as the ability to survive extreme conditions (such temperature, drought, pH, saline, etc.), high nitrogen-fixing potential, weed and disease control ability, nutrient status. can improve yield companion crops an intercropping system a subsequent crop (due their residual effects). They possess symbiotic non-symbiotic organisms nodules, also have different bulk soil, rhizoplanes rhizosphere, which fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus or produce exudates help improving plant growth. Also, they contain some phytochemicals, including alkaloids, saponin, amino acids, organic inorganic minerals, compounds that human health prevent diseases. Hence, review discusses current status, role, challenges prospects security.

Abstract Background The Sub-Saharan African food system is facing multiple threats, including soil nutrient depletion, monoculture cereal farming, population expansion, and climate change. These factors collectively pose a risk to agricultural productivity security in the region. Scope Bambara groundnut (BGN) (Vigna subterranea [L.] Verdc) yield has been decline due various abiotic such as high temperature, drought, salinity, well biotic like nitrogen-fixing symbiont host specificity. challenges have negatively impacted crop security. This review highlights significance of BGN addressing insecurity explores its potential advantages for small-scale farmers. provides good example strong effects microbiome, particularly specific symbionts root nodules, on production systems. A focus this highlight applications biofertilizers groundnut. Conclusion emphasizes improve fertility, using inoculation technology, which could benefit farmers contribute enhancing Bradyrhizobium inoculants may be designed specifically cultivar level BGN.

Abstract Background Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are important for the acceleration of crop improvement through knowledge marker-trait (MTA). This report used DArT SNP markers to successfully perform GWAS on agro-morphological traits using 270 bambara groundnut [ Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.] landraces sourced from diverse origins. The study aimed identify marker nine agronomic and their candidate genes. experiment was conducted at two different locations laid out in alpha lattice design. cowpea unguiculata Walp.] reference genome (i.e. legume most closely related groundnut) assisted identification Results analyses showed that linkage disequilibrium found decay rapidly with an average genetic distance 148 kb. broadsense heritability relatively high ranged 48.39% (terminal leaf length) 79.39% (number pods per plant). identified a total 27 significant associations (MTAs) studied explaining 5.27% 24.86% phenotypic variations. Among traits, highest number MTAs obtained seed coat colour (6) followed by days flowering (5), while least is maturity (1), 5.76% 11.03%, 14.5% 19.49%, 11.66% variations, respectively. Also, 17 genes were identified, varying traits; (6), (3), terminal length (2), width pod (1) (1). Conclusion These results revealed prospect variations associated groundnut. its present new opportunity explore strategies breeding improvement.

Energy from biomass is increasingly gaining attention amidst the environmental challenges of coal and fossil fuels. This study investigated effects inert gases (N2, CO2, N2/CO2) on intermediate pyrolysis product properties Bambara Groundnut Shells (BGS) (shells an underutilized crop, which has high nutritional values). N2/CO2 atmosphere roughly represents flue gas. The results showed that did not significantly affect yields bio-oil, biochar, syngas. pH bio-oil ranged 5.2–5.8, indicating minimum presence acids in bio-oil. CHNS analysis all biochar had their carbon content within 50.04–60.49 wt.%. FESEM resulted a wide range pore sizes produced atmosphere. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) revealed compounds can be categorized as alkene, acid, benzene derivatives, ketone, phenol alcohol, aldehyde, alkyl, ester. However, gas favored alcohol production significantly.

While Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) originates from Africa and the list of producers is topped by African countries, it not clear whether research developed enough to support crop promotion in continent. Thus, this systematic review 180 articles presents a comprehensive summary on (BGN) Africa. The paper addresses bibliographical metrics, geographic distribution themes covered (viz., food nutrition security, climate resilience, livelihoods). analysis shows that BGN can help address different challenges Africa, such as insecurity poverty. However, also highlights gaps geographical thematic standpoints. Bambara groundnut, an underutilized crop has been proved to be indigenous in Africa with the potential for food security. The rhizosphere of groundnut contains Rhizobacteria, ability grow, adapt, and colonize their surroundings even unfavorable conditions have not explored plant growth-promoting properties. aim this research was determine rhizobacteria from soil samples as either biofertilizers or biocontrol agents both help provide sustainable agriculture globally. rhizospheric were collected analyzed chemical composition. Rhizobacteria isolates cultured samples. Plant growth-promoting, antifungal activities phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA carried out on identify rhizobacteria. A 2-year field study planting effect these ( Vigna subterranean ). a complete randomized block experimental design three replications. All able produce ammonia 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate, while 4.65, 12.28, 27.91% produced hydrogen cyanide, indole acetic acid, solubilized phosphate, respectively, making them important targets biofertilizer agents. results revealed that treatment had significant compared control. Characterization selected reveals identity B. amyloliquefaciens, thuringiensis , Bacillus sp. These can used enhance growth crops consequent improved yield. This is first time are applied biofertilizer.

Orphan legumes are now experiencing growing demand due to the constraints on available major food crops. However, focus crops, little research has been conducted orphan compared especially in microbiome application improve growth and yield. Recent developments have demonstrated enormous potential of beneficial microbes promotion resistance stress diseases. Hence, this perspective is examine plant promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bambara groundnut yield quality. Further insights into use PGPR as a biological control agent crop discussed. Finally, three genera commonly associated with disease ( Bacillus, Pseudomonas , Streptomyces ) were highlighted case studies for BGN production.
