Critical realism provides an alternative to positivism and interpretivism. It foregrounds ontology evaluative approach knowledge, while promoting eclectic reasoning, transdisciplinarity, ethical research across the quantitative/qualitative, macro/micro other divides. Health researchers have usefully employed critical realism, though it has also been dismissed as strange, a source of self-deception hubris. Furthermore, accused dehumanizing many people. Responding these charges, this article makes case for carefully employing within beyond social studies health. first outlines some basic realist tenets before summarizing two exemplars sociology health, illness medical work. The discussion section, observing principle hermeticism, engages with criticisms offering prolegomenon on COVID-19 pandemic response. In conclusion, 'radical' proposal is ventured possible transformative action so that society less hierarchical, more equal salutogenic.

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused the Disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide pandemic in 2020. In response, most countries world implemented lockdowns, restricting their population's movements, work, education, gatherings, and general activities attempt to “flatten curve” of COVID-19 cases. public health goal lockdowns was save population from cases deaths, prevent overwhelming care systems with patients. this narrative review I explain why changed my mind about supporting lockdowns. initial modeling predictions induced fear crowd-effects (i.e., groupthink). Over time, important information emerged relevant modeling, including lower infection fatality rate (median 0.23%), clarification high-risk groups (specifically, those 70 years age older), herd immunity thresholds (likely 20–40% immunity), difficult exit strategies. addition, on significant collateral damage due response pandemic, adversely affecting many millions people poverty, food insecurity, loneliness, unemployment, school closures, interrupted healthcare. The novel COVID-19 pandemic has created an extraordinary situation for our generation, with many countries being on lockdown. With this new comes psychological challenges, not only health care workers and people suffering from COVID-19, but also the general population. Adapting to can be demanding. Experts have suggested that emotions during are very similar grief, experience emptiness sadness about loss of their normal lives, which even lead a meaning in life. In paper, we argue life crafting could offer way help cope renew sense meaning. A intervention is based theoretical insights multiple areas research, like positive psychology, expressive writing, salutogenesis framework. Life-crafting interventions find by focusing ideal future, helping them set goals, make concrete plans achieve those goals overcome obstacles. The effectiveness of policymakers’ decision-making in times crisis depends largely on their ability to integrate and make sense information. COVID-19 confronts governments with the difficult task making decisions interest public health safety. Essentially, policymakers have react a threat, which extent is unknown, they are under time constraints midst immense uncertainty. stakes high, issues involved complex require careful balancing several interests, including (mental) health, economy, human rights. These circumstances render processes vulnerable errors biases processing information, thereby increasing chances faulty poor outcomes. Prior research has identified three main information-processing failures that can distort group lead negative outcomes: (1) failure search for share (2) elaborate analyze information not line earlier (3) revise update conclusions policies light new To date, it yet been explored how underlying these impact crisis. In this narrative review, we outline groupthink, narrow focus problem containing virus, escalation commitment may pose real risks handling result widespread societal damages. Hence, vital take steps maximize quality process increase positive outcomes as goes forward. We propose reflexivity—a deliberate discussing team goals, processes, or outcomes—as an antidote decision-making. Specifically, recommend evidence-based reflexivity tools could easily be implemented counter improve uncertain times.

Abstract Community lockdowns and travel restrictions are commonly employed to decelerate epidemic spreading. We here use a stochastic susceptible-infectious-recovered model on different social networks determine when what degree such likely be effective. Our research shows that community effective only if the links outside of communities virtually completely sealed off. The benefits targeting specifically these links, as opposed uniformly at random across whole network, inferable beyond 90% lockdown effectiveness. And even then peak infected curve decreases by 20% its onset is delayed factor 1.5. This holds for static temporal networks, regardless their size structural particularities. Networks derived from cell phone location data online location-based platforms yield same results large family hyperbolic geometric network models where characteristic path lengths, clustering, structure can arbitrarily adjusted. complex connectedness modern human societies, which enables ease global communication lightning speeds news information spread, thus makes it very difficult halt spreading with top-down measures. therefore emphasize outstanding importance endogenous self-isolation distancing successfully arresting

A series of aggressive restrictive measures were adopted around the world in 2020–2022 to attempt prevent SARS-CoV-2 from spreading. However, it has become increasingly clear most (lockdown) response strategies may involve negative side-effects such as a steep increase poverty, hunger, and inequalities. Several economic, educational, health repercussions have fallen disproportionately on children, students, young workers, especially groups with pre-existing inequalities low-income families, ethnic minorities, women. This led vicious cycle rising issues. For example, educational financial security decreased along unemployment loss life purpose. Domestic violence surged due dysfunctional families being forced spend more time each other. In current narrative scoping review, we describe macro-dynamics that are taking place because public policies psychological tactics influence behavior, mass formation crowd behavior. Coupled effect inequalities, how these factors can interact toward aggravating ripple effects. light evidence regarding health, economic social costs, likely far outweigh potential benefits, authors suggest that, first, where applicable, lockdown should be reversed their re-adoption future avoided. If needed, non-disruptive. Second, is important assess dispassionately damage done by offer ways alleviate burden long-term Third, structures counterproductive assessed sought optimize decision-making, counteracting groupthink increasing level reflexivity.
