Abstract The past few decades have seen a rapid increase in the use of functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) cognitive neuroscience. This fast growth is due to several advances that fNIRS offers over other neuroimaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography. In particular, harmless, tolerant bodily movements, highly portable, being suitable for all possible participant populations, from newborns elderly experimental settings, both inside outside laboratory. this review we aim provide comprehensive state‐of‐the‐art basics, technical developments, applications. discuss some open challenges potential neuroscience research, with particular focus on naturalistic environments social

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) research articles show a large heterogeneity in the analysis approaches and pre-processing procedures. Additionally, there is often lack of complete description methods applied, necessary for study replication or results comparison. The aims this paper were (i) to review investigate which information generally included published fNIRS papers, (ii) define signal procedure set common ground standardization guidelines. To goal, we have reviewed 110 2016 field cognitive neuroscience, performed simulation with synthetic data optimize filtering step before applying GLM method statistical inference. Our highlight fact that many papers important information, variability used. simulations demonstrated optimal approach remove noise recover hemodynamic response from framework use 1000th order band-pass Finite Impulse Response filter. Based on these results, give preliminary recommendations as first toward improving dissemination results.

SignificanceFunctional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is unique among neuroimaging techniques in its ability to estimate changes both oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR). However, fNIRS research has applied various data reporting practices based on these chromophores as measures of neural activation.AimTo quantify the variability chromophore explore recent trends literature.ApproachWe reviewed 660 papers from 2015, 2018, 2021 extract information practices.ResultsOur review revealed five general for chromophores: (1) HbO only, (2) HbR (3) HbR, (4) correlation-based signal improvement, (5) either total (HbT) or difference (HbDiff) concentration between chromophores. The field was primarily divided only HbR. one consistently observed most popular practice each year reviewed.ConclusionsOur results highlight high heterogeneity research. We discuss potential implications study comparison efforts interpretation results. Most importantly, our demonstrates need a standard improve scientific transparency and, ultimately, better understand how events relate cognitive phenomena.

Abstract Impaired cerebrovascular function contributes to the genesis of age‐related cognitive decline. In this study, hypothesis is tested that impairments in neurovascular coupling (NVC) responses and brain network predict dysfunction older adults. Cerebromicrovascular working memory healthy young ( n = 21, 33.2±7.0 years) aged 30, 75.9±6.9 participants are assessed. To determine NVC functional connectivity (FC) during a (n‐back) paradigm, oxy‐ deoxyhemoglobin concentration changes from frontal cortex using near‐infrared spectroscopy recorded. significantly impaired 2‐back task participants, while networks characterized by higher local global connection strength, dynamic FC p < 0.05). Both increased correlate with decline accuracy task. These findings suggest task‐related states adults require stronger connections compensate for attenuated associated load.

The optical brain imaging method functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising tool for real-time applications such as neurofeedback and brain-computer interfaces. Its combination of spatial specificity mobility makes it particularly attractive clinical use, both at the bedside in patients' homes. Despite these advantages, optimizing fNIRS use requires careful attention to two key aspects: ensuring good maintaining high signal quality. While detects superficial cortical regions, consistently reliably targeting specific regions interest can be challenging, studies that require repeated measurements. Variations cap placement coupled with limited anatomical information may further reduce this accuracy. Furthermore, important maintain quality contexts ensure they reflect true underlying activity. However, signals are susceptible contamination by cerebral extracerebral systemic noise well motion artifacts. Insufficient preprocessing therefore cause system run on instead aim review article help advance progress fNIRS-based applications. It highlights potential challenges improving quality, discusses possible options overcome challenges, addresses considerations relevant By addressing topics, aims improve planning execution future studies, thereby increasing their reliability repeatability.
