Aquaculture serves as a source of protein and livelihood is an alternative to capture fisheries, thereby reducing pressure on the wild. However, aquaculture tends be limited by sustainability issues, which include overdependency fishmeal, high cost associated with environmental impact activities, may detrimental aquatic lives environment, use antibiotics treat diseases, have adverse effect in their host or environment. Efforts are being made toward attaining practical ways enhance sustainability. One such effort using functional feed additives formulation. Functional dietary ingredients incorporated formulations, not only for usual provision basic nutritional requirements offered traditional but also growth health enhancement; economic gain. This review emphasizes importance incorporating probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, phytogenics. study evaluates presents holistic information additives, roles enhancing sustainability, challenges encountered application.

ABSTRACT The aquaculture industry is a significant source of food proteins and other essential nutrients, providing the much‐needed requirements for human nutrition. However, identifying sustainable affordable feed ingredients growing sector remains challenge industry. African sector, in particular, developing discernibly but faces distinct socioeconomic infrastructural challenges. Elevated usage fishmeal financially challenging associated with ecological risks. This review examines potential alternative protein sources growth while addressing challenges, including lack processing technology investments, availability, economic viability, policy regulations, social conflicts, anti‐nutritive substances. Alternative have considerable terms sustainability viability. By‐products from animals could be most promising near future, as they are cost‐effective, available, do not compete humans source. Insect alternatives utilization consumption. Shortfalls technology, infrastructure, targeted investments bottlenecks that must resolved to increase production.

According to the FAO and WHO, half of world’s population (nearly eight billion people) is protein deficient. Protein deficiency most important nutritional problem in world. Proteins can be animal- (meat offal, fish, milk, eggs) or plant- (cereals, legumes, oilseeds) based, microbiologically synthesized (from yeast a variety bacteria), synthetic artificial (produced after amino acid synthesis). Animal proteins are expensive. The systematic incorporation alternative human diet becoming increasingly urgent as global meat costs rise. Legumes, cereals, seeds, nuts all provide body. Microalgae considered an excellent source functional biologically active nutrients for needs. Arthrospira platensis Chlorella vulgaris popular microalgae on market today, both which marketed standalone foods containing proteins, vitamins, minerals. Insects, dietary protein, differ content from 20 75%. Investments plant-based companies exceeded $350 million 2020. predicts that edible insects will reach $1.2 by 2023. All these sources more modern food industry production high-protein supplements. This review aims state-of-the-art study new potential proteins.

Aquaculture production is at a record level and estimated to increase in the coming years. However, this can be negatively affected by infectious diseases produced viruses, bacteria, parasites, causing fish mortality economic losses. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small that may promising candidates replace antibiotics because they first line of defense animals against wide variety pathogens have no negative effects; also show additional activities such as antioxidant or immunoregulatory functions, which makes them powerful alternatives for use aquaculture. Moreover, AMPs highly available natural sources already been used livestock farming food industries. Photosynthetic marine organisms survive under all kinds environmental conditions extremely competitive environments thanks their flexible metabolism. For reason, these represent source bioactive molecules nutraceuticals pharmaceuticals, including AMPs. Therefore, study we reviewed present knowledge about from photosynthetic organism analyzed whether could suitable

The aquaculture sector faces uncertainty due to environmental changes, economic factors, and availability of food resources. Conventional aquatic feeds heavily depend on fishmeal. This results in sustainability challenges overexploitation wild fish stocks, rising costs, impacts, which has driven the search for innovative sustainable alternatives, such as insects. European Union legislation evolved allow use certain insect species aquafeeds, favoring market access approval additional species. However, regulations still need be standardized across countries substrates approved feed clearly defined, since nutritional composition insects diet. These ingredients have high potential replace fishmeal feeds, although, present regarding optimal growth digestibility, specially chitin composition, that overcome. its derivatives may also positive effects prebiotic immunomodulator. insect-based protein sources several benefits, efficient nutrient utilization, short maturation periods, profitability, addressing associated with conventional aquafeed ingredients. Scientific studies indicate improve flesh quality, strengthen immune system, reduce disease susceptibility farmed fish, promoting productive systems. integration alternative can offer a promising path towards environmentally friendly Based research available this topic, review aimed evaluate real using raw-materials their growth, immunological response, resistance, safety fish.

Algae can leverage aquaculture sustainability and improve the nutritional functional value of fish for human consumption, but may pose challenges to carnivorous fish. This study aimed evaluate potential a commercial blend macroalgae (Ulva sp. Gracilaria gracilis) microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris Nannochloropsis oceanica) in plant-based diet up 6% (dry matter basis) on digestibility, gut integrity, nutrient utilization, growth performance, muscle European seabass juveniles. Fish (11.3 ± 2.70 g) were fed with isoproteic, isolipidic, isoenergetic diets: (i) commercial-type moderate fishmeal (125 g kg-1 DM without algae (control diet; Algae0), (ii) control 2% (Algae2), (iii) 4% (Algae4), (iv) (Algae6) 12 weeks. The digestibility experimental diets was assessed parallel after 20 days. Results showed that most nutrients energy apparent coefficients promoted by supplementation, concomitant increase lipid retention efficiencies. Growth performance significantly blend, final body weight Algae6 being 70% higher than Algae0 weeks, reflecting 20% feed intake algae-fed enhanced anterior intestinal absorption area (up 45%). Whole-body contents increased dietary supplementation levels 1.79 1.74 folds 6 compared Algae0, respectively. Even though proportion polyunsaturated fatty acids reduced, content EPA DHA nearly 43% Algae0. skin filet color juvenile affected inclusion changes small case muscle, meeting preference consumers. A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of same fishmeal protein level replaced by black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) meal (BSFL) with different lipid contents on growth performance and intestinal health juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) (initial body weight 12.64 g). Three isonitrogenous isolipidic diets were formulated: fish meal-based diet (FM), DF FF, in which 14% FM defatted full-fat BSFL, respectively. There no significant differences performance, morphology, mucosal barrier function between group. However, FF markedly reduced perimeter ratio, gene expression anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-β (P < 0.05). Compared group communities microbiota more similar FM. Moreover, decreased abundance some potential pathogenic bacteria enriched probiotics, such as Bacillus. Diet obviously altered composition increased bacteria. These results suggested that application BSFL showed positive effects than closely involved these effects.
