Biomarkers of metabolic syndrome and inflammation are pathophysiological predictors factors senescence age-related diseases. Recent evidence showed that particular diet components, such as walnuts rich in antioxidant bioactive compounds with a balanced lipid profile, could have positive outcomes on human health. A systematic search PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov databases was performed to retrieve randomized controlled trials published from the beginning each database through November 2021, reporting walnut consumption over 22 inflammatory markers middle-aged older adults. The strategy rendered 17 studies final selection, including 11 crossover 6 parallel trials. study revealed walnut-enriched diets had statistically significant decreasing effects for triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol concentrations some presented no consequences anthropometric glycemic parameters. Although further better-designed ones needed strengthen these findings, results emphasize benefits dietary plans this age group.

Plant-based materials are an important source of bioactive compounds (BC) with interesting industrial applications. Therefore, adequate experimental strategies for maximizing their recovery yield required. Among all procedures extracting BC (maceration, Soxhlet, hydro-distillation, pulsed-electric field, enzyme, microwave, high hydrostatic pressure, and supercritical fluids), the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) highlighted as advanced, cost-efficient, eco-friendly, sustainable alternative recovering (polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids) from plant sources higher yields. However, UAE efficiency is influenced by several factors, including operational variables process (frequency, amplitude, ultrasonic power, pulse cycle, type solvent, time, solvent-to-solid ratio, pH, particle size, temperature) that exert impact on molecular structures targeted molecules, leading to variations in biological properties. In this context, a diverse design experiments (DOEs), full or fractional factorial, Plackett-Burman, Box-Behnken, Central composite, Taguchi, Mixture, D-optimal, Doehlert have been investigated alone combination optimize plant-based materials, using response surface methodology mathematical models simple multi-factorial/multi-response approach. The present review summarizes advantages limitations most common DOEs materials.

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) has been extensively utilized across various traditional medicinal systems, including ancient Greek medicine, Chinese and Islamic medicine. H. is a well-known plant due to the presence of hypericin hyperforin, which are natural antidepressants. Recent studies indicate that inflorescences wild source rare tocotrienols, primarily δ-T3. Similar lacking for cultivated species. was grown three years. At full bloom each year, cut separated into its parts: stems, leaves, flower buds, flowers. Tocotrienols (T3s) were present in part perforatum. The lowest concentration tocotrienols recorded stems highest buds (1.7–4.2 88.2–104.7 mg/100 g dry weight, respectively). Flower flowers main α-T3 δ-T3 tocotrienols. significant impact on tocochromanol profile concentration, while year harvest/plant aging does not. study demonstrates heads first known with relatively high concentrations accumulate over tocopherols, regardless plant.

Juglans regia L., walnut, is a large, long-living tree, cultivated in temperate climates around the world. It highly appreciated for its nutritional kernels and high-quality timber. Its barks, leaves, husk are used as dyes folk medicine herbal remedies several diseases. From biological chemical standpoint, relatively little known about male flowers of tree. Therefore, aim study was to evaluate phenolic profile well vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiproliferative activity L. flowers. Phenolic content determined by UPLC/PDA/MS/MS analyses; antioxidant assessed five different methods; antimicrobial evaluated against six most common pathogenic strains Gram-positive Gram-negative bacteria, properties were cell lines. Most analyses carried out this performed first time raw material. J. flower extract characterized strong ability scavenge DPPH˙ free radicals, hydroxyl chelating metal ions. Among examined bacterial neoplastic lines, strongest shown S. aureus, monocytogenes, B. cereus, cytotoxic breast cancer, glioblastoma, astrocytoma cells. Male have also been found be rich source compounds. The polyphenols 4369.73 mg/100 g d.w., 24 compounds from group flavonoids, acids, juglunosides identified. Additionally, correlation between capacity observed. This why tested an excellent effective natural antibacterial, chemopreventive that potential pharmaceutical or food industries.

The sampling consisted two varieties: 'Touriga Nacional' 'Sousão'. A response surface methodology (RSM) method was used optimize extraction conditions based on three independent variables according chemical characteristics stability/lability traits associated polyphenols; phytochemical in pomace: solvent (50%, 70%, 90% ethanol); temperature (20 °C, 40 60 °C); pH (0.5% HCl, 2% 3.5% HCl). profile, as well radical scavenging reducing powers were determined 27 different samples. highest yield antioxidant activity corresponded extracts obtained at °C using HCl 70% ethanol. values for total phenols flavonoids 44.93 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) 22.95 catechins (CE) per gram, respectively. Concerning evaluation capacity various assays such ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, results 0.30, 0.43, 0.36 mmol Trolox equivalent (TEAC) correspondingly. analysis best performance these parameters via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry has also performed, allowing us identify fourteen (14) compounds, including phenolic acids (n = 3), flavonols 7), anthocyanins 4). Epilobium species are used in Romanian folk medicine as tinctures, tea, or tablets for ameliorating the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), but scientific-based evidence is scarce this other endemic plants same genus. Therefore, aims research were to evaluate phytochemical profile five (E. hirsutum L., E. parviflorum Schreb., palustre L. dodonaei Vill., and angustifolium L.) assess their vitro biological activity. For enhanced recovery polyphenols, a D-optimal experimental plan was developed using Modde software optimal working conditions ultra-turrax-assisted extraction, 8 min, with 30% ethanol water. The optimized extracts obtained from various plant parts further characterized by LC-MS analysis, major compound being oenothein B. All demonstrated good antioxidant activity, evaluated DPPH TEAC assays. most prominent antimicrobial potency displayed against Bacillus cereus, while Gram-(+) bacteria, moderate efficacy observed. Furthermore, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, potential assessed on normal fibroblasts carcinoma cell lines. From extracts, aerial had highest selectivity toward killing cancerous cells, followed extract. effect, leaves hirstum potency, decreasing ROS at level observed positive control. anti-inflammatory potential, based IL-6 IL-8 levels, extracts. In conclusion, all harvested flora possess diverse composition, which supports complex activities.
