Abstract Purpose Postoperative delirium (POD) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated increased mortality and healthcare costs. In this study, we investigated the association of OSA risk, serum biomarkers for central nervous ischemia (S100B NSE), POD. Methods After research ethics approval, completed STOP BANG assessment before undergoing elective surgery. Blood was drawn S100B NSE measurement, cognitive performance tested using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at study admission postoperatively discharge. Delirium performed Nursing Screening Scale (NuDESC) Confusion Method (CAM). Results One hundred twenty-four enrolled were separated into three OSA-risk groups based on score testing (low n = 22; intermediate 67; high 35). Preoperative values risk (NSE ng/ml; mean [range]; low risk: 15.6 [9.2–44.3]; 21.8 [7.6–114.1]; 29.2 [10.1–151]; p 0.039). MoCA NuDESC assessments not different between groups. We found a decreasing incidence POD increasing (positive CAM: 18.1%, 12.0%; 11.5%, 0.043). However, no longer detectable complete case analysis. POD, postoperative ischemic biomarker Conclusion trend which robust Our results possibly support phenomenon hypoxic preconditioning.

Hypobaric hypoxia (HH) characteristics induce impaired cognitive function, reduced concentration, and memory. In recent years, an increasing number of people have migrated to high-altitude areas for work study. Headache, sleep disturbance, impairment from HH, severely challenges the physical mental health affects their quality life efficiency. This review summarizes manifestations, mechanisms, preventive therapeutic methods HH environment affecting function provides theoretical references exploring treating high altitude-induced impairment.

Abstract Periodic breathing during sleep at high altitude is almost universal among sojourners. Here, in the context of acclimatization and adaptation, we provide a contemporary review on periodic altitude, explore whether this an adaptive or maladaptive process. The mechanism(s), prevalence role acclimatized lowlanders are contrasted with available data from adapted indigenous populations (e.g. Andean Tibetan highlanders). It concluded that (1) persists severity proportional to sleeping altitude; (2) does not seem coalesce poor quality such that, acclimatization, there appears be lengthening cycle length minimal impact average oxygen saturation; (3) highlanders appear demonstrate blunting breathing, compared lowlanders, comprising feature withstands negative influences chronic mountain sickness. These observations indicate no obvious consequences; however, attenuated adaptation therefore potentially reflects trait environment. image

Background/Objectives: High-altitude environments have a significant detrimental impact on the cognitive functions of brain. Qi Jing Wan (QJW), traditional herbal formula composed Angelica sinensis, Astragalus membranaceus, and Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, has demonstrated potential efficacy in treating disorders. However, its effects dysfunction plateau hypoxic remain unclear. Methods: In this study, acute chronic impairment mouse models were constructed to investigate preventive therapeutic QJW active ingredient, diosgenin (Dio). Behavioral experiments conducted assess learning memory mice. Morphological changes hippocampal neurons synapses assessed, microglial activation inflammatory factor levels measured evaluate brain damage. Potential ingredients capable crossing blood–brain barrier identified through chemical composition analysis network database screening, followed by validation animal organoid experiments. Transcriptomics analysis, immunofluorescence staining, molecular docking techniques employed explore underlying mechanisms. Results: significantly enhanced abilities model mice, reduced structural damage neurons, restored NeuN expression, inhibited activation, improved synaptic revealed that Dio alleviated protected function regulating expression PDE4C. Conclusions: These findings indicate ingredient effectively mitigate injury prevent high-altitude environments.

Both sleep deprivation and hypoxia have been shown to impair executive function. Conversely, moderate intensity exercise is known improve In a multi-experiment study, we tested the hypotheses that would ameliorate any decline in function after i) three consecutive nights of partial (PSD) (Experiment 1) ii) isolated combined effects single night total (TSD) acute 2). Using rigorous randomised controlled crossover design, 12 healthy participants volunteered each experiment (24 total, 5 females). both experiments seven (2-choice reaction time, logical relations, manikin, mathematical processing, 1-back, 2-back, 3-back) tasks were completed at rest during 20-min semi-recumbent, cycling. Tasks following conditions: before PSD habitual normoxia (FIO2 = 0.12) one TSD Although on functions inconsistent, (regardless hypoxic status) reduced functions. Significantly, regardless or status, are improved an bout exercise. These novel data indicate improves performance TSD, status. The key determinants and/or mechanism(s) responsible for this improvement still need be elucidated. Future work should seek identify these mechanisms translate significant findings into occupational skilled settings.

Abstract: Introduction: The human brain is a highly oxygen-dependent organ. Low environmental oxygen availability (e.g., hypobaric hypoxia at altitude) major challenge to the and numerous endogenous cellular systemic responses therefore are in place mitigate hypoxic stress. When dose of stress surpasses adaptive capabilities brain, cerebral forms high-altitude illnesses can develop, prevalence which increases with altitude. Hypoxia also trigger psychotic symptoms. Despite that, effects altitude exposures on people pre-existing mental disorders surprisingly scarcely investigated. Methods: In this narrative review we summarize literature brain’s put them context somatic consequences exposure from an interdisciplinary perspective. Results: We identify knowledge gaps high clinical relevance related safety exposures, particularly for individuals disorders. Conclusions: Taken together, research into vulnerability neuropsychiatric risk developing symptoms different populations (diseased, healthy, athletes) urgently needed provide appropriate evidence-based counselling treatment.
