ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a significant environmental pollutant with profound implications for public health, particularly substrates to facilitate bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Recently, studies shown that MPs may accommodate biofilm communities, chemical contaminants, and genetic material containing AMR genes. This study investigated the effects of MP concentration, composition, size on development multidrug in Escherichia coli . Specifically, we exposed E. varying concentrations different types, including polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, across range sizes (3–10, 10–50, 500 µm). Results indicated cells attached had elevated (in Notably, exhibited higher propensity facilitating than control such glass, likely due their hydrophobicity, greater adsorption capacities, surface chemistries. found bacteria passaged formed stronger biofilms once were removed, which was associated changes motility. Over the years, it has become evident that microplastics are one of most important contaminants concern requiring significant attention. The large abundance currently in environment poses potential toxicity risks to all organisms exposed them. Microplastics have been found affect physiological and biological processes marine terrestrial organisms. As well as being a contaminant itself, also ability act vectors for other contaminants. carry pollutants transfer them documented literature. linked hosting antibiotic resistant bacteria resistance genes which risk current health system. This paper sheds light on the alarming issue of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in aquatic environments, exploring its detrimental effects ecosystems and public health. It examines multifaceted role use aquaculture, agricultural runoff, industrial waste fostering development dissemination resistant bacteria. The intricate interplay between various environmental factors, horizontal gene transfer, bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) accelerating spread ABR is comprehensively discussed. Various BEVs carrying genes like blaCTX-M, tetA, floR, sul/I, as well their contribution to dominance multidrug-resistant bacteria, are highlighted. potential both a threat tool combating explored, with promising strategies targeted antimicrobial delivery systems probiotic-derived EVs holding significant promise. underscores urgency understanding environments. By unraveling these unseen weapons, we pave way for developing effective mitigate ABR, advocating multidisciplinary approach that includes stringent regulations, enhanced wastewater treatment, adoption sustainable practices aquaculture.

The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive recent draft issued last October 2022 pays attention to contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants (OMPs) and requires the removal some them at large urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) calling for their upgrading. Many investigations date have reported occurrence a vast group OMPs in influent many technologies been tested lab- or pilot-scale. Moreover, it is well-known that hospital (HWW) contains specific high concentration therefore its management deserves attention. In this study, 1-year investigation was carried out full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating mainly HWW. To promote OMPs, powdered activated carbon (PAC) added 0.1 g/L 0.2 which resulted MBR operating as hybrid MBR. Its performance 232 target 90 non-target analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MS using direct injection method. A new methodology defined select key compounds order evaluate treatments. It based on frequency, occurrence, persistence removal, bioaccumulation toxicity. Finally, an environmental risk assessment OMP residues conducted means quotient approach. results indicate PAC addition increased most (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac, lidocaine) classes antibiotics, psychiatric drugs stimulants) with highest loads WWTP influent. also reduced receiving water dosage spiramycin, lorazepam, oleandomycin. uncertainties issues related being under real conditions are discussed.

Background: Presently, there is increasing public consciousness regarding the contamination and detection of microplastics (MPs) within human body, studies on characterization MPs in breast milk are limited. Objectives: This study aims to investigate prevalence characteristics found examine relationship between maternal hygiene practices, complications that may arise during breastfeeding, composition bacterial microbiota. Methods: Postpartum was analyzed for using Raman micro-spectroscopy. The MP detection, hygiene, breastfeeding complications, microbiota examined. In order identify correlations differences groups had detected non-detected MPs, statistical analyses were performed, which involved demographic comparisons correlation network analysis. Results: mean age 59 postpartum women 28.13 years. We 38.98% samples (23 59), exhibiting diverse morphological chemical characteristics. Most polymers polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride. Maternal differed MPs-detected groups. behaviors influence presence milk, associated with these differences. Bacterial analysis revealed significant taxonomic Staphylococcus Streptococcus dominated group, while Enterobacter, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter group. group a more even distribution, especially Bacteroides. Conclusions: micro-spectrometry, PP, PE, PVC being most common. Significant without MPs. Breast be linked detection. Further should conducted possible maternal-child health.
