Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) pose significant threats to aquatic terrestrial ecosystems, disrupting nutrient cycling, altering soil properties, affecting microbial communities. MPs NPs bioaccumulate contribute global water cycle disruptions, intensifying the impact of climate change. Despite widespread use plastics, inadequate plastic waste management leads persistent environmental pollution. Toxic compounds are transported by NPs, food chains, cycles, overall ecosystem health. biogeochemistry, activity, greenhouse gas emissions nitrogen carbon cycles. The widespread use of plastics has increased environmental pollution by micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), especially polystyrene (PS-MNPs). These particles are persistent, bioaccumulative, linked to endocrine-disrupting toxicity, posing risks reproductive health. This review examines the effects PS-MNPs on mammalian systems, focusing oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal imbalances. A comprehensive search in Web Science Core Collection, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, identified studies impact fertility, including oogenesis, spermatogenesis, folliculogenesis. An analysis 194 publications revealed significant harm, such as reduced ovarian size, depleted follicular reserves, apoptosis somatic cells, disrupted estrous cycles females, along with impaired sperm quality imbalances males. were endocrine disruption, leading cellular molecular damage. Further research is urgently needed understand toxicity mechanisms, develop interventions, assess long-term health impacts across generations, highlighting need address these challenges given growing exposure.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a common plastic widely used in food and beverage packaging that poses serious risk to human health the environment due continual rise its production usage. After being produced used, PET accumulates breaks down into nanoplastics (NPs), which are then consumed by humans through water sources. The threats posed PET-NPs of great concern worldwide, yet little known about their biological impacts. Herein, smallest sized so far (56 nm) with an unperturbed structure were modified dilution-precipitation method potential cytotoxicity was evaluated Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Exposure decreased cell viability oxidative stress induction revealed increased expression levels response related-genes as well lipid peroxidation. Cell death induced PET-NP exposure mainly apoptosis, while autophagy had protective role.

The increasing trend regarding the use of plastics has arisen an exponential concern on fate their derived products to environment. Among these derivatives, microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) have been featured for associated environmental impact due low molecular size high surface area, which prompted ubiquitous transference among all interfaces. Due heterogenous chemical composition MNPs, study particles focused a number studies, as result myriad physicochemical properties that contribute co-transference wide range contaminants, thus becoming major challenge scientific community. Sub-Saharan Africa faces increasing levels of plastic production and importation, unregulated usage, inadequate waste management systems. This region’s harsh conditions often lead to breaking down into microplastics nanoplastics. review explores the abundance micro/nanoplastics across different environmental mediums, such as surface waters, sediments, aquatic organisms, in sub-Saharan African countries. It also highlights knowledge gaps concerning micro/nanoplastics. The effects plastics on food production, water quality, health, environment are discussed. Strategies address challenges pollution proposed. Finally, concludes with future perspectives for addressing ongoing Africa. materials this study were sourced from published articles Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, additional platforms, including reports various press releases, using keywords waste, micro/nano-plastic, Africa, toxicity, circular economy. Articles initially screened by reviewing abstracts, followed a thorough reading full papers identify relevant studies. Key information was extracted these selected incorporated review.

Rubber materials enter aquatic environments by stormwater runoff via sources such as playground mulch, athletic fields, and roadway surfaces. Tire rubbers are considered plastics they comprise a substantial portion of synthetic polymers. particles complex variable depending on the type, source, age rubber. In this study, zebrafish embryos daphnids were exposed to nano-scale or micro-scale particles, leachate from recycled rubber (RR), crumb (CR), cryo-milled tire tread (CMTT). Zebrafish evaluated for lethal sub-lethal effects over 120 h exposure, while tested 48 period. Nano-scale RR, CR, CMTT elicited hatch delay in with similar EC50 values (1.3 × 109–1.4 109 particles/mL). Micro-scale did not elicit any significant developing zebrafish. all significantly increased compared leachate, suggesting an adverse nanoparticle effect unexplained chemical leaching alone, indicating particle-specific effects. Daphnia RR micro- exposures resulted mortality, LC50 9.8 105 microparticles/mL 5.0 108 nanoparticles/mL, respectively. Leachate mortality. Sublethal nano-TP decreased microalgae ingestion after 24 h. Plastics are integral to daily life due their flexibility, durability, low viscosity, and poor conductivity. However, UV exposure, weathering, biodegradation fragment plastics into microplastics nano plastics, forming a heterogeneous mix categorized as large (5 mm 1 mm), small (1 μm), (<1 μm). Concerns over the health impacts of micro plastic (MNP) pollution have spurred extensive research, revealing increased disease susceptibility. Recent studies, analyzed using tools like Biblioshiny Vos viewer software, focused on authorship, journal sources, geographic origins, emerging trends in MNP research. Data from SCOPUS database (January 1, 2015 January 3, 2024) via Microsoft Excel revealed 478 articles, with steady annual increase publications references, highlighting growing interest nanoplastics’ impacts. China leads collaborations, eight top ten contributing institutions located there, alongside Spain Serbia. Chinese authors also dominate published papers leading journals, five which prominent Environmental Science. This study presents first visual metametrological analysis connection between nanoplastics human bibliometric techniques. By examining global research implications, we can better understand current landscape set priorities for future studies.
