Abstract This review examined relevant literature on insect-based feed and food in Africa, focusing the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, larvae (BSFL). Literature was systematically reviewed following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Only articles communicated English, published up to March 2024, conducted microbiological, chemical, physical hazards related production, processing, consumption of BSFL, were included this review. Our findings revealed that Africa produces 20,000 tonnes BSFL annually against a potential 3,000,000 tonnes. A diversity substrates ranging from human fecal matter agricultural by-products waste used rear whose screening characterization processes largely inadequate. inadequacy compromises quality safety products derived as it makes them susceptible allergenic, chemical contamination. Several bottlenecks safe sustainable production identified. They lack technology, low levels skills, appropriate legislation regulatory framework insects feed. To address identified issues, is recommended frameworks be established feed, substrate increased, digital platforms information sharing, publicity, education created promote food.

Chitin and its deacetylated derivative, chitosan, are biopolymers of significant interest due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, wide-ranging applications in biomedical, environmental, industrial fields. The exploitation crustaceans as the traditional source chitosan raises concerns about overfishing ecological sustainability. Modern insect farming, contrast, offers advantages such a circular insect-based economy leading reduced carbon footprint. This review explores potential insect-derived an alternative, emphasizing environmental benefits during production, functional properties, applications. Several aspects key analytical techniques for chitin characterization, including photometric, chromatographic, spectroscopic methods, also discussed. underscores versatility biomedical applications, wound healing drug delivery, well agriculture, packaging, wastewater treatment.

This study assessed the performance of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) fed different tomato plant residues (fruit, leaves, and stems) at doses ranging from 100 to 350 mg/larva/day over ten days. Most resulted in 100% survival, except for leaf residue highest dose (300 mg/larva/day), which had an 88% survival rate. Growth varied by substrate, with increase observed larvae-fed fruit, followed stems leaves. However, no exceeded control diet regarding biomass accumulation, although fruit tomatoes produced wet (13.71 g). Larvae-fed also showed best waste reduction index (WRI) 7.56, substrate (SR) 75%, a feed conversion rate (FCR) 3.29. Furthermore, was most efficient converting organic into larval biomass. demonstrates potential using as sustainable BSFL, offering effective way manage agricultural produce valuable

Abstract Organic wastes, including cheese whey, are generated in greater quantities each year, which require management that has economic and social implications. Current treatments of whey do not allow for its complete degradation or utilization. In this context, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) promise to degrade a variety wastes while generating accumulating value‐added products such as protein, fat can be transformed into biodiesel, fertilizer obtained from their residues. work, the aim was evaluate cultivation BSFL biological treatment revaluation process well composition residue (FRASS) subsequent extraction protein. It observed did affect growth larvae, on contrary, it increased (final weight = 0.252 ± 0.003 g). The biomass composed mainly lipids (42.48 1.26% dry matter) protein (34.98 0.72% matter). A fatty acid profile also performed, confirms that, due (Saturated acids 262.91 34.81 mg/g; monounsaturated 85.29 19.64 polyunsaturated 63.68 11.33 mg/g), these accumulated extracted biodiesel production. This is first approach utilization through insects.

The growing demand for animal products leads to mounting environmental impacts from the livestock sector. In light of desired transition linear circular nutrient flows and an increasing number formal commitments toward reducing production, manure valorization using insects (particularly black soldier fly larvae; BSFL) gains importance. Based on Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, this paper identified 75 BSFL production systems utilizing various types as feed substrates. review highlights considerable differences in system design regarding different steps their specific characteristics. These lead a wide spectrum rearing performances, which were measured by suite indicators, including dry matter reduction (DMR), waste index (WRI), conversion efficiency (FCE), bioconversion rate (BCR), nitrogen reduction. results further show that, date, most manure-valorizing operate at micro-scale level. However, targets manure-related emissions will likely necessitate large-scale farm or industrial level, research should thus focus comprehensive assessment potential benefits BSFL.

Acyl carrier protein (ACP) is an acyl in fatty acid synthesis and important cofactor of synthetase. Little known about ACP insects how this may modulate the composition storage acids. We used RNAi-assisted strategy to study potential function Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae). identified a HiACP gene with cDNA length 501 bp classical conserved region DSLD. This was highly expressed egg late larval instars most abundant midgut fat bodies larvae. Injection dsACP significantly inhibited expression level further regulated treated H. The saturated acids reduced, percentage unsaturated (UFAs) increased. After interfering HiACP, cumulative mortality increased 68.00% (p < 0.05). growth greatly influenced. development duration 5.5 days, average final body weights larvae pupae were decreased by 44.85 mg 14.59 mg, respectively, lengths shortened 3.09 mm 3.82 mm, respectively. adult eclosion rate oviposition females also severely These results demonstrated that regulates content influences multiple biological processes illucens.

To produce green diesel from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL; Hermetia illucens), the maximization of lipids in production and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reactions was investigated. In this study, BSFL were fed 12 diets based on three different substrates (ground corn, food waste, meat by-product). The proximate compositions analyzed, rearing time, rate, feeding mixture prices also recorded. maximize lipid yield, effects growing temperature, drying method, extraction temperature HDO reaction oil with 1 wt % Pt/Al2O3 catalyst carried out a trickle bed reactor. components produced under optimal conditions through compositionally analyzed. As result being ground by-products, it confirmed that diet 30% corn 70% by-product led to highest content BSFL. After considering diets, we found most ideal could be applied actual insect farming waste by-products. From perspective period, appropriate BSFL-rearing medium 38 °C. harvesting BSFL, yield improved when extracted at 65–75 °C after using microwave. analysis results showed carbon distribution hydrodeoxygenated offered an advantage used as drop-in fuel, represents promising future step for lipids.
