Digital economy and the urban–rural income gap: Impact, mechanisms, and spatial heterogeneity

This study examines how digital economy development in China impacts the urban–rural income gap. We construct a index using panel data from 30 provinces and cities 2013 to 2021. By combining spatially varying coefficient model with chain–mediated effect model, we quantify impact of on gap examine its spatial heterogeneity. The results show that influences through four different pathways, each which exhibits significant variation. As these paths offset other, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Guangdong, other has widened gap, resulting divide effect. However, most areas China's northeast, east coast, western regions, narrowed dividend investigates relevant debates among scholars provides valuable insights foundations for strategic decision making reduce various regions.
