Mitigating heat is a vital ecosystem service of trees, particularly with climate change. Land surface temperature measures captured at single time day (in the morning) dominate urban island literature. Less known about how local tree canopy and impervious regulate air throughout day, and/or across many days varied weather conditions, including cloud cover. We use bike-mounted sensors in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, from 2019 to 2021 generalized additive mixed models 156 rides estimate daily variation cooling benefits associated cover, warming cover 90 m buffers surrounding bike observations. Cooling inferred by subtracting bicycle-observed reference station. The were strongest midday (11:00-14:00, -1.62 °C), afternoon (14:00-17:00, -1.19 morning (8:00-11:00, -1.15 °C) on clear days. effect was comparatively smaller cloudy mornings -0.92 °C afternoons -0.51 °C. Warming surfaces most pronounced evening (17:00-20:00, 1.11 irrespective clouds, during nights (20:00-23:00) 1.03 95 % CI [1.03, 1.04]. Among hottest observed (top 25th percentile station maxima), lower temperatures -1.78 [-1.78, -1.78], -1.17 [-1.19, -1.15], -1.12 [-1.12, -1.11]. add broader spectrum conditions explicitly greater temporal resolution measuring bike-based research. Future mobile sampling campaigns may broaden spatial extent more environmental variation, representing an opportunity for public science engagement.

This study investigates the formation of cold air pools during calm, anticyclonic winter nights in a topographic basin bounded by medium-sized mountain to east and near-flat terrain elsewhere. The main objective is understand how local topography drives unique topoclimatic conditions—specifically lakes an inversion layer at approximately 100/120 m altitude—in peri-urban depression where major cement factory several residential areas are located. To achieve this, research design combined surface measurements (collected 10:00 p.m., 3:00 a.m., 7:00 p.m.) using motorized vehicle, with vertical (at a.m.) collected via two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), three equipped Tinytag data loggers. Empirical Bayesian Kriging tool ArcGIS Pro was employed generate temperature cartograms. results show that shortly after sunset, 100–120 thickness forms, nocturnal variations up 8 °C on night measurements. An detected around 120–130 m, while near-zero wind speeds basin’s core facilitate retention air. Surface spatialization confirms earlier findings lake thermal belts perimeter, forming early evening dissipating late morning. A 3D visualization underscores influence directing downslope, leading stabilization stratification within lower atmospheric layers. These carry significant health implications: pollutants released plant tend accumulate pool beneath layer, posing potential risks nearby populations.

The spatial forms of hill-neighboring blocks and the wind–thermal environment are crucial components urban planning ecology. Understanding their correlation is significant for creating a healthy community enhancing sustainable level buildings systems. Therefore, Jinan, multi-mountainous city in China, taken as research area, ideal model built based on categories all these block types by aerial imagery semantic segmentation algorithm. Then, we use CFD simulation software PHOENICS evaluation system weighted random forest to simulate assess environment. Ultimately, correlations specific mathematical equations between form indicators obtained parametric method. results demonstrate that interface density near-hill side hill surface roughness most related overall variation has distinct influence proportion breeze area PMV. relationship determined herein can provide strategic recommendations decision makers optimizing outdoor air flow thermal comfort pedestrians, which helps create comfortable cities.

Urban transformations, driven by human activities, result in unique urban ecosystems that significantly impact thermal environments. This study delves into the implications of anthropogenic climate change on diverse structures, aiming to enhance resilience. A key question arises: how do different structures affect environments at multiple scales? explores relationship between morphology and temperature variations both surface vertical levels during times day. Using data loggers recordings through UAV, were collected pre-established pedestrian pathways cover morphologies. The selection routes covered densities urbanized areas green spaces. facilitated creation a examining 2D 3D space landscape Mediterranean city—Coimbra, Portugal. gathered provided insight (1) role spaces climatic regulation city, regardless time day; (2) direct relation temperatures morphology; (3) fact act as cell fresh air, even where there is measurable heat island; (4) with high tree density present great inertia specific each first 30 m, whereas from 200 m all profiles similarly; (5) show differentiated temperatures, altitude. research underscores pivotal city planning, emphasizing their importance for bolstering Acknowledging benefits offered imperative aligning sustainable development objectives modern cities.

The urban heat island effect has become a widely concerning issue worldwide. Many researchers have made great efforts to improve the summer thermal comfort of street canyons by optimizing greening. Relatively less research focused on how greening during cold days. proposed strategies using road This may significant negative impact winter due lack consideration hot and days simultaneously, especially when green space is mainly composed evergreen tree species. We aimed explore impacts at same time. used Zhutang West Road in Changsha, China, as an example built six different models vegetation types, number trees, heights, crown widths, Leaf Area Index canyon. In addition, we also considered building features wind directions employed ENVI-met (version 5.5.1) simulate models. results show that model with high canopy density, tall large dense crowns, sufficient shade good (the average physiological equivalent temperature (PET) 31.1 °C for study period) bad PET 13.3 °C) it compared other PETs are 36.2 °C, 31.5 41.5 35.5 respectively, models). very short hedges positive °C). value another comparable which does not °C. Even if small area ventilation, more obvious relatively 14.2 bigger areas 13.9 summer, parallel direction canyon, speed canyon lower winter, perpendicular buildings trees strong windproof this beneficial improvement 15.3 model). lays solid foundation encourages people think about composition configuration simultaneously.
