The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to pose a global threat. While its virulence has subsided, it persisted due the continual emergence of new mutations. Although many high-risk conditions related COVID-19 have been identified, understanding protective factors remains limited. Intriguingly, epidemiological evidence suggests low incidence COVID-19-infected CD patients. present study explores whether their genetic background, namely, associated HLA-DQs, offers protection against severe outcomes. We hypothesize that HLA-DQ2/8 alleles may shield patients from and subsequent effects, possibly memory CD4 T cells primed by previous exposure human-associated common cold coronaviruses (CCC) higher affinity those allele's groove. In this context, we examined potential cross-reactivity between epitopes CCC assessed binding (BA) these HLA-DQ2/8. Using computational methods, analyzed sequence similarity four distinct CCC. Of 924 unique immunodominant 15-mer with at least 67% identity, 37 exhibited significant BA HLA-DQ2/8, suggesting effect. various mechanisms might explain role in COVID-19-afflicted If substantiated, insights could enhance our gene-environment enigma viral-host relationship, guiding therapeutic innovations ongoing pandemic.

Abstract Aim We aimed to evaluate the impact of Coronavirus Disease‐19 (COVID‐19) pandemic on incidence and clinical presentation celiac disease (CD) in children. Methods The diagnoses CD were compared between COVID‐19 (from April 2020 March 2022) pre‐pandemic period 2018 2020) three Italian Paediatric Gastroenterology centres (Varese, Como, Catanzaro). Electronic patient records reviewed additional information collected through parental interview. diagnosis was made according ESPGHAN criteria. SARS‐CoV‐2 infection diagnosed based pre‐vaccination positive serum antibodies or nasopharyngeal swabs. Z test chi‐square used for statistical analysis. Results overall number paediatric did not differ two years periods (177 172 cases) participating centres. Clinical also similar throughout study periods. has been documented 10.6% children but only 5.8% these occurred before diagnosis. Conclusion Different what reported other autoimmune diseases, presenting symptoms our population change during previous 2 years.

Due to the need reorganize care network for national screening mandated by law, a new healthcare model was required management of coeliac disease. The hub-and-spoke is organizational system, here we describe its application (supported telehealth), in pediatric disease (CD) Liguria. results pilot phase are presented and system's strengths weaknesses discussed. A mixed-methods survey followed an observational study performed. multiphase approach used including preparation setting, operative planning application. involves single primary center. reduction families' expenditure environmental impact assessed using Viamichelin calculator. regional meeting (specifically developed this study) needs analysis highlighted priority have efficient, up date homogeneous assistance throughout network. diagnostic therapeutic pathway (PDTC) working group. project involved 986 Ligurian families allowed 90% distance traveled residing within center's catchment area, saving €177 113 kg CO2 on average per family year. Recent studies have implied an increased incidence of autoimmune diseases following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The objective was to determine if infections were associated with celiac disease (CD), type 1 diabetes (T1D), and thyroid (AITD) autoantibodies in a population-based screening when pandemic hit South Sweden during 2021 2022. Between August June 2022 self-obtained capillary plasma samples collected from 1088 children at 6-9 years age 1185 adolescents 13-16 age, who randomly invited general population for CD, T1D, AITD, antibodies. Among screened T1D infection rate tissue transglutaminase autoantibody (tTGA) positive (13/17; 76.5%) compared tTGA negative (492/1168; 42.1%) 13-16-year-old individuals (p = 0.0057). There no association between AITD- or autoantibodies. Our findings indicate potential prior screening-detected CD autoimmunity aged years. Further research is needed elucidate whether ongoing increases susceptibility may act as trigger genetically environmentally predisposed individuals.

Abstract Objectives The aim of the study was to assess long‐term health‐related quality life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents with coeliac disease (CD), their parents. Methods We re‐evaluated prospectively HRQoL clinical characteristics 80 families, assessed 5 years earlier, using a disease‐specific questionnaire, CD Dutch Questionnaire (CDDUX), generic Paediatric Quality Life Inventory (PedsQL). Results After 10‐year follow‐up, there no significant change total CDDUX PedsQL scores parents when compared evaluation conducted earlier. score reflected neutral QoL, while for good‐very good. only decrease after subdomain Emotional functioning . Patients who admitted voluntarily eating gluten reported lower Diet Lower “ Physical functioning” (PedsQL) were patients positivity TTG or associated diseases. Conclusions indicated consistently stable QoL perception among caregivers, even postdiagnosis, suggesting minimal fluctuations impact on health domains over time. Furthermore, good could be reflection resilience families coping this chronic condition. During the past 3 years, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a great impact on people all over world. However, it become evident that manifestations and severity differ across age groups. Most children have milder course than adults but possibly more pronounced gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Given child’s developing immune system, of COVID-19 development may compared to adults. This study reviews potential bi-directional relationship between GI diseases in children, focusing common pediatric conditions such as functional disorders (FGID), celiac (CeD), inflammatory bowel (IBD). Children with diseases, general, CeD IBD, particular, do not seem an increased risk severe COVID-19, including risks hospitalization, critical care need, death. While infections are considered candidate environmental factors both IBD pathogenesis, specific infectious agents known triggers for FGID, there is still sufficient evidence implicate either these diseases. given scarcity data possible latency period development, future investigations this field warranted.

Background: Strategies for diagnosing celiac disease (CD) include case-finding and population-screening programs. Case finding consists of testing individuals at increased risk the due to symptoms or associated conditions.
