Changes in the gut microbiome can affect cognitive and psychological functions via microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis. Probiotic supplements are thought to have largely positive effects on mental health when taken sufficient amounts; however, despite extensive research having been conducted, there is a lack of consistent findings probiotics anxiety depression associated alterations. The aim our study systematically review most recent literature last 10 years order clarify whether could actually improve symptoms. Our results indicate that majority suggests beneficial role treatment anxiety, existence substantial number less findings. Given probiotics' potential offer novel, personalized options for mood disorders, further, better targeted psychiatric populations needed address concerns about exact mechanisms probiotics, dosing, timing treatment, possible differences outcomes depending severity depression.

Probiotics may represent a safe and easy-to-use treatment option for depression or its metabolic comorbidities. However, it is not known whether features can influence the efficacy of probiotics treatments depression. This trial involved parallel-group, prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled design. In total, 116 participants with received probiotic preparation containing Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell®-52 Bifidobacterium longum Rosell®-175 placebo over 60 days. The psychometric data were assessed longitudinally at five time-points. Data blood pressure, body weight, waist circumference, complete count, serum levels C-reactive protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose measured beginning intervention period. There was no advantage usage in score overall (PRO vs. PLC: F(1.92) = 0.58; p 0.45). we found higher rate minimum clinically important differences patients supplemented than those allocated to generally (74.5 53.5%; X2(1,n 94) 4.53; 0.03; NNT 4.03), as well antidepressant-treated subgroup. ABSTRACT Advancing microbiome–gut–brain axis science requires systematic, rational and translational approaches to bridge the critical knowledge gaps currently preventing full exploitation of gut microbiome as a tractable therapeutic target for gastrointestinal, mental brain health. Current research is still marked by many open questions that undermine widespread application humans. For example, lack mechanistic understanding probiotic effects means it remains unclear why even apparently closely related strains exhibit different in vivo. live microbial psychobiotics, consensus on their adjunct treatments conventional neuromodulators, use unmedicated populations or at‐risk cohorts with sub‐clinical symptomatology warranted. This missing information both sides equation when treating central nervous system (CNS) conditions makes psychobiotic challenging, especially compared other pharmaceutical functional food approaches. Expediting transition from positive preclinical data proven benefits humans includes interpreting promises pitfalls animal behavioural assays, well navigating mechanism‐informed decision making select right microbe(s) job. In this review, we consider how these decisions can be supported light accrued range clinical studies across healthy, pathological study populations, where specific have been evaluated context gastrointestinal physiology, function behaviour. Examples successful, partial unsuccessful translation bench bedside are considered. Psychobiotics, live microorganisms that provide mental health by interacting with the gut microbiota, are emerging as a promising therapeutic option for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Their effectiveness in addressing conditions such depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), eating disorders were examined through comprehensive analysis of existing studies up to first half 2024, based on data from reliable electronic databases. We found psychobiotics can significantly reduce symptoms various influencing neurotransmitter levels, regulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, improving barrier function short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) other metabolites. However, several limitations identified, including inconsistent study methodologies, small sample sizes, lack long-term safety. Addressing these rigorous research is essential establishing standardized protocols fully confirming potential psychobiotics. In conclusion, show great promise complementary treatments conditions, but continued necessary refine their application integrate them into clinical practice effectively.
