Nutrient recovery from secondary resources, such as wastewater, has received increasing attention in recent years. cycle sustainability and recycling approaches are important measures under development considerations. This paper aims to present an overview of routes technologies for nutrient sewage sludge improving their sustainability. First, current briefly reviewed. Next, commercial technologies, projects, emerging techniques around the world with key factors a successful phosphorus technology is presented. Finally, proposal these practices It concluded that gap between demand supply can be major driver shift ‘removal treat’ ‘recovery reuse’. Moreover, there not, will never be, one-size-fits-all solution. Future strategies roadmaps need adapted local economy geographical context more than ever.

Electrochemically upcycling wastewater nitrogen such as nitrate (NO3–) and nitrite (NO2–) into an ammonia fertilizer is a promising yet challenging research topic in resource recovery treatment. This study presents electrified membrane made of CuO@Cu foam polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) for reducing NO3– to (NH3) NH3 (NH4)2SO4, liquid ready-use. A paired electrolysis process without external acid/base consumption was achieved under partial current density 63.8 ± 4.4 mA·cm–2 on the cathodic membrane, which removed 99.9% feed (150 mM NO3–) after 5 h operation with rate 99.5%. energy 3100 91 g-(NH4)2SO4·m–2·d–1 21.8 3.8 kWh·kg–1-(NH4)2SO4, respectively, almost outcompete industrial production cost Haber–Bosch process. Freshwater is a scarce resource that continues to be at high risk of pollution from anthropogenic activities, requiring remediation in such cases for its continuous use. The agricultural and mining industries extensively use water nitrogen (N)-dependent products, mainly fertilizers explosives, respectively, with their excess accumulating different bodies. Although removal NO3 soil through the application chemical, physical, biological methods has been studied globally, these seldom yield N2 gas as desired byproduct cycling. These predominantly cause secondary contamination deposits chemical waste slurry brine, nitrite (NO2), ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), which are also harmful fastidious remove. This review focuses on complete denitrification facilitated by bacteria remedial option aimed producing terminal byproduct. Synergistic interaction metabolisms highlighted, detailed attention optimization enzymatic activities. A biotechnological approach mitigating industrial using indigenous wastewater proposed, holding prospect optimizing point denitrification. was reviewed found durable, sustainable, cost effective, environmentally friendly, opposed current physical technologies.

Wastewater treatment plants (WwTPs) remove microplastics (MPs) from municipal sewage flow, with the resulting bulk of MPs being concentrated within generated sludge which is frequently recycled back onto agricultural land as accepted practice in many European countries a sustainable fertiliser resource. This circular process means that successfully removed WwTPs are deposited into soil and able to return natural watercourse by run-off or infiltration groundwater. study quantifies removal efficiency size ranging between 1000 5000 μm primary settlement tank (PST) at WwTP serving population equivalent 300,000 provides MP concentrations sludge. Our revealed proportion partitioning PST settled sludge, floating scum effluent was 96%, 4% 0% respectively, implying 100% 1000-5000 size. The estimated contain approximately 0.01 g 24.7 particles per dry solid, ∼1% weight. Using these figures data Commission Eurostat, potential yearly contamination soils throughout nations be mass 31,000 42,000 tonnes (considering size) 8.6×1013-7.1×1014 25-5000 size). An maximum application rate 4.8 MP/m2/yr 11,489 particles/m2/yr, suggests spreading on could potentially make them one largest global reservoirs pollution. Hence, recycling raw should reviewed avoid introducing extreme pollution environment.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plants and plays important role in agriculture. However, the cycle between nitrogen input into agriculture content wastewater has been broken. Recently, recovery from was demonstrated using electrochemical system (ES) combined with a gas permeable membrane. Once concentrated, ammonia recovered acid, producing either ammonium sulfate (AS) or nitrate (AN). The ES operated at different conditions while guaranteeing certain removal concentrated fertilizer. An 25.5 gN/L 21.5 were recovered. To evaluate performance of these fertilizers, 5 treatments applied to two crops, spinach radish. (1) AS ES, 2) commercial AS, 3) AN 4) AN, 5) no addition (control). Between fertilized treatments, significant difference observed fresh biomass leaf (consumable part crop) fertilizers. Effective fertilization confirmed by significantly higher both radish spinach, compared control. After harvest, soil pH above 5.0 despite low fertilizers (pH 1.8 - 2.4). This work demonstrates that systems can be used improve crop growth are feasible alternative

The study evaluated the combined phosphorus, nitrogen, methane, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) recovery from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment plants. About 30% of organics are recovered as EPS 25-30% methane (≈260 ml methane/g VS) by integrating alkaline anaerobic digestion (AD). It was shown that 20% excess total phosphorus (TP) ends in EPS. Further, 20-30% an acidic liquid waste stream (≈600 mg PO4-P/L), 15% AD centrate (≈800 PO4-P/L) ortho-phosphates both streams is recoverable via chemical precipitation. nitrogen (TN) organic Ammonium high-temperature attractive, but it not feasible for existing large-scale technologies because low ammonium concentration. However, concentration calculated to be 2600 NH4-N/L ≈20% TN, making recovery. methodology used this consisted three main steps. first step develop a laboratory protocol mimicking demonstration-scale extraction conditions. second establish mass balances over process on demonstration scales within full-scale AGS WWTP. Finally, feasibility resource based concentrations, loads, integration
