Heavy metal contamination in marine ecosystems poses a critical environmental challenge, with significant implications for biodiversity, trophic dynamics, and human health. Marine fish are key bioindicators of heavy pollution because their role food webs capacity bioaccumulation transfer. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the pathways mechanisms accumulation fish, focusing factors that influence uptake, retention, tissue distribution. We explore processes governing transfer biomagnification, highlighting species-specific patterns risks posed to apex predators, including humans. Additionally, we assess ecological consequences at population, community, ecosystem levels, emphasizing its effects reproduction, community structure, interactions. By integrating recent findings, this highlights gaps suggests future research directions improve monitoring risk assessment. Given persistence bioavailability metals environments, effective control strategies sustainable fisheries management imperative mitigate long-term public health risks.

Fish not only constitute an important trophic level in aquatic ecosystems but also serve as source of protein for human beings. The health fish is related to the sustained and healthy development their entire ecosystem. Due widespread use, mass production, high disposal frequency, degradation resistance plastics, these pollutants are released into environments on a large scale. They have become one fastest growing substantial toxic effect fish. Microplastics intrinsic toxicity can absorb heavy metals discharged water. adsorption onto microplastics affected by many factors serves convenient way migrate from environment organisms. exposed both metals. In this paper, effects metal reviewed, focus at individual (survival, feeding activity swimming, energy reserves respiration, intestinal microorganisms, growth, reproduction), cellular (cytotoxicity, oxidative damage, inflammatory response, neurotoxicity, metabolism) molecular (gene expression) levels. This facilitates assessment pollutants’ impact ecotoxicity contributes regulation environment.

In recent years, with the aggravation of environmental pollution, study aquatic ecotoxicology has become a hot topic. Some organisms, such as large fleas, toads, and zebrafish, have been developed applied model organisms. They increasingly used to bioaccumulation toxicity pollutants due advantages their small size, easy reproduction, short life cycle, low maintenance cost, ability combine genetic, cellular, whole organism endpoints. This review summarizes methods in ecotoxicology, using its developmental toxicity, biomarkers, genomics, phenotype analysis evaluate pollutants, providing reference value for researchers select animals research.

Heavy metals are among the most important pollutants that threaten aquatic environment when their concentrations exceed certain limits. Some of these and metalloids beneficial necessary for fish, but others, such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) mercury (Hg), non-essential toxic. In reviewing recent relevant literature, 4 different continents, 13 countries, more than 50 fish species were analyzed in terms As, Cr, Cd, Pb Hg concentrations. According to comparative results, it was found Tercan Dam Lake, Turkey, highest concentration Cr detected Capoeta umbla (2.455 mg/kg), As Ctenopharyngodon idella (0.774 mg/kg) species. Greater values permissible limits FAO/WHO also Andalusia, Southern Spain, Mullus surmuletus (0.427 Sardina pilchardus (0.561 Sprattus sprattus (0.636 Baltic Sea, a remarkably high content (8.48 determined Penaeus notialis, Guinea, Africa. Moreover, Cd low nil almost all cases, with exception Amblyceps mangois collected from Dhaleshwari River Bangladesh, which showed value (0.063 mg/kg). Finally, extremely levels Plectropomus pessuliferus (5.05 Epinephelus summana (2.80 Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The under limit megrim red mullet Andalusian Sea exhibiting relatively higher (0.091 0.067 general, sequence accumulation toxic elements > Hg.
