Thousands of oil and gas structures have been installed in the world's oceans over past 70 years to meet population's reliance on hydrocarbons. Over last decade, there has increased concern how handle decommissioning this infrastructure when it reaches end its operational life. Complete or partial removal may not present best option considering potential impacts environment, society, technical feasibility, economy, future asset liability. Re-purposing offshore also be a valid legal under international maritime law where robust evidence exists support option. Given complex nature infrastructure, global horizon scan was undertaken, eliciting input from an interdisciplinary cohort 35 experts develop top ten priority research needs further inform decisions advance our understanding their impacts. The highest priorities included: (1) assessment contaminants acceptable environmental limits reduce for ecological harm; (2) defining risk acceptability thresholds policy/governance; (3) characterising liability issues ongoing costs responsibility; (4) quantification ecosystem services. remaining (5) quantifying connectivity; (6) assessing marine life productivity; (7) determining feasibility re-use; (8) identification stakeholder views values; (9) greenhouse emissions; (10) developing transdisciplinary decision-making process. Addressing these will help policy development governance frameworks provide industry stakeholders with clearer path forward decommissioning. principles framework developed paper are equally applicable informing responsible renewable energy particular wind turbines, field that is accelerating rapidly.

Abstract Many seafood products marketed as “sustainable” are not. More exacting sustainability standards needed to respond a fast-changing world and support United Nations SDGs. Future fisheries must operate on principles that minimise impacts marine life, adapt climate change allow regeneration of depleted biodiversity, while supporting enhancing the health, wellbeing resilience people communities. We set out 11 actions achieve these goals.

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) have reached international prominence for their role in global climate change mitigation while delivering other essential ecosystem services. Among these, cultural services (CES) of BCEs, which are the non-material benefits that contribute to human well-being, often under represented and unexplored due challenges identifying valuing intangible benefits. Reflecting these challenges, a systematic review was conducted analyze state research on CES BCEs. Specifically, we identified abundance research, geographic distribution studies, frameworks methodologies used, categories frequency. The results show studies focusing BCEs vary dependent specific BCEs; example, related mangroves more well-represented than saltmarshes seagrasses. displayed high occurrence Asia, with fewer regions. Furthermore, observed values physical experiences commonly addressed those intrinsic values. Despite progress typologies assessments, there knowledge gaps potentially reflect under-investigation limited understanding valued based people's perceptions characteristics habitat. Additionally, is an opportunity be integrated into restoration strategies.

Marine plankton include organisms driving multiple ecosystem services (ESs). In this study, we identified ESs provided by planktonic consortia worldwide from the analysis of scientific literature. We also mapped onto forty-nine trophic networks derived presence–absence data obtained two coastal surveys in three areas along coast Campania region Tyrrhenian Sea (NW Mediterranean). The systematic review evidenced that associated with goods provision and regulation were most studied categories, while cultural least considered. mapping across revealed significant spatiotemporal variations plankton-based ESs, which depend on seasonal variability local environmental conditions. Among those connected maintenance marine ecosystems dominated both temporally spatially, highlighting crucial role stability resilience. Moreover, although direct materials was less represented, food to higher levels widespread within each sector, biodiversity directly sustaining whole related economic activities such as fisheries aquacultures.

Marine zoning is a widely used spatial tool for managing ocean spaces, minimizing conflicts between uses, and maintaining ecosystem services. This review examines profiles the use of marine its potential to support climate resilience services through systematic PRISMA analysis 121 articles. The findings highlight importance balancing sustainable resource human well-being with nature protection well-tailored objectives. underscores need expand research on underrepresented habitats such as seagrass algae, which play critical role in change mitigation. Additionally, it highlights necessity broadening scope consider activities beyond fisheries, are often primary focus. Stakeholder engagement public awareness identified crucial effective planning. A significant gap noted integration natural capital into research. Furthermore, despite zoning’s address challenges, reviewed articles reveal limited attention this topic, indicating an urgent further advocates incorporation service valuation considerations ensure management that balances ecological preservation well-being.

Marine ecosystem services provide multiple benefits and hold significant economic value; however, the capacity of marine environment to can be compromised by anthropogenic pressures. To ensure proper environmental conditions human well-being, it is necessary study functioning services. In this context, aim test whether Common International Classification Ecosystem Services (CICES) cascade framework adequate explain flow between natural socio-economic domains identify its limitations. end, was divided in two parts: (i) review, compilation classification CICES Cascade model indicators, for three service examples (provisioning, regulation maintenance, cultural), together with analysis number indicators match undertaken authors literature proposal; (ii) application practical case anchovy fishery Bay Biscay.
