Backed by the Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 and 2030, numerous 'Mapping Assessment of Ecosystem Services' (MAES) projects have been completed in recent years member states European Union, with substantial results insights accumulated. The experience from different approaches is a valuable source information for developing assessment processes further, especially regard their uptake into policy more recently, ecosystem accounting. Systematic towards best practices lessons learned national MAES are yet lacking. This study presents survey conducted participants overviewing 13 processes. Focus hereby put on types methods used, assessed services, perceived challenges advancements. All services at several levels service cascade (69% least three levels), using diverse set data sources (with 4.7 average). More accessible was used frequently (e.g., statistical literature being most popular). Challenges regarding uptake, synthesizing results, gaps or reliability were as severe. Insufficient evaluation uncertainty seen major critical point, emphasized crucial implementation. Moving accounting ES frame environmental-economic accounts, considering uncertainties assessments should be even important.

With more than half the world's population living in urban areas, most of people's potential to receive ecosystem service benefits occurs cities. However a straightforward, replicable approach quantifying multiple services has yet emerge, so planning decisions often overlook value nature could provide people. Urbanization is likely increase development pressure on many forms green spaces across cities, particularly for golf courses that represent substantial part areas United States. Here, we developed process assess how supply three (urban cooling, stormwater nutrient retention, and pollinator abundance) change with alternative land uses, using course Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area Minnesota, USA as case study. We framework changes found infrastructure provided by an intermediate amount compared five other use options. Combining cover zoning data parameterize existing models important advancement. Our study describes combine provides insights planners interested exploring public consequences The we've can be applied scenarios cities comparable help integrate into planning.

A novel pan-European marine model ensemble was established, covering nearly all seas under the regulation of Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with aim providing a consistent assessment potential impacts riverine nutrient reduction scenarios on eutrophication indicators. For each sea region, up to five coupled biogeochemical models from institutes over Europe were brought together for first time. An ideal form of smart city planning would focus on the availability urban amenities that can meet basic needs a resident's material life, civil connections, and humanistic spirit. Previous studies have concentrated analyzing spatial distribution services, with less attention their contribution as local amenities. In this study, we propose dynamic modeling approach based using social media data from Google Place API to provide locational information potential resident interactions. We use representative region in Europe (Stockholm County, SE) simulate project development until 2050. Our circular conceptual framework feedback supports decision-makers testing possible scenarios align vision city. Simulation results reveal interplay between human-land interactions specific spatial-temporal scale, analyze scenario outcomes relation commercial residential land uses. Overall, our study provides new perspective human-social behavior-driven development, through smart, model support system enhance realism, ultimately help realize planned objectives region.

The Baltic Sea is essential for marine ecosystem services (MES) provision and the region's socio-economic dynamics. It considered one of busiest most polluted regional seas in Europe. In recent years a collective effort enforcing European environmental policies directives (e.g. Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, 2000; Marine Strategy 2008/56/EC, 2008; Maritime Spatial Planning 2014/89/EU, 2014) has been carried out. Nature-based solutions have emerged as a concept for integrating ecosystem-based approaches whilst addressing multiple sustainable development goals. However, implementing nature-based is inherently complex and requires consideration of range environmental socio-economic conditions that may impact on their effectiveness. This research assesses ecosystem services within the Valletta urban agglomeration, Malta, evaluates implications arising from existing distributional patterns.Proxy-based indicators expert knowledge were used to map assess set 14 services.Proximity correlation analyses inequalities differentiated availability types with high service capacities groups different characteristics.Data relating schooling, employment, sickness, disability, old age, combined identify areas relative advantage disadvantage. The highest in fringes lowest dense cores.Private gardens trees had regulating per unit area.Contrastingly, public low effectiveness but cultural capacities.Availability green infrastructure tree cover differ according advantage, disadvantaged communities generally reduced proximity ecosystems capacities.Considering these findings, we argue assessments can support greening strategies by identifying most effective play redistributive role distribution cities.
