Climate change is commonly assumed to induce species’ range shifts toward the poles. Yet, other environmental changes may affect geographical distribution of species in unexpected ways. Here, we quantify multidecadal European forest plants and link these key drivers biodiversity change: climate change, atmospheric deposition (nitrogen sulfur), canopy dynamics. Surprisingly, westward were 2.6 times more likely than northward ones. Not but nitrogen-mediated colonization events, possibly facilitated by recovery from past acidifying deposition, best explain movements. Biodiversity redistribution patterns appear complex are driven interplay among several due exclusive effects alone.

In the Mediterranean basin, urban forests are widely recognized as essential landscape components, playing a key role in nature-based solutions by enhancing environmental quality and providing range of ecosystem services. The selection woody plant species for afforestation reforestation should prioritize native that align with biogeographical ecological characteristics planting sites. Among these, Quercus cerris L. (Turkey oak) is considered promising candidate reforestation. However, its fitness within forest environments remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify suitable leaf functional traits assessing response Q. analyze main climatic variables influencing performance contexts. We also proposed practical, rapid monitoring tools compare natural across different seasons. results demonstrated experiences significant water stress due combined effects drought high temperatures. To find mitigate this stress, differences between such specific area, thickness, contents chlorophyll, anthocyanins, flavonols were analyzed. Abstract The first comprehensive phytosociological classification of all vegetation types in Europe (EuroVegChecklist; Applied Vegetation Science , 2016, 19 3–264) contained brief descriptions each type. However, these were not standardized and mentioned only the most distinct features practical application system could be enhanced if users had option to select sets based on various combinations structural, ecological, biogeographical attributes. Based a literature review expert knowledge, we created new database that assigns categorical attributes 12 variables 1106 alliances dominated by vascular plants defined EuroVegChecklist. These include dominant life form, phenological optimum, substrate moisture, reaction, salinity, nutrient status, soil organic matter, region, elevational belt, azonality, successional status naturalness. has potential enhance usefulness for researchers practitioners help understand this non‐specialists.

On the occasion of completion fourth volume Vegetation Classification and Survey (VCS), we have analysed performance journal since its inception. The number papers pages show a moderate increase over years. VCS has been included in Scopus database for more than year received first CiteScore 2.0 summer 2023 but is not yet Web Science Core Edition. We therefore used data from to compare citation impact articles with that 29 other ecological journals. By calculating normalized rates per publication year, found started at bottom rankings two years (28 th out 30) improved 26 2022 14 2023. Abstract Questions Forests are highly fragmented across the globe. For urban forests in particular, fragmentation increases exposure to local warming caused by heat island (UHI) effect. We here aim quantify edge effects on herbaceous understorey vegetation forests, and test whether these interact with forest structural complexity. Location set up a pan‐European study at continental scale including six Zurich, Paris, Katowice, Brussels, Bremen, Stockholm. Methods recorded plant communities from towards interior of forests. Within each forest, we studied edge‐to‐interior gradients paired stands differing Community composition was analysed based species specialism, life form, light, nutrient, acidity disturbance indicator values species' thermal niches. Results found that edges supported more generalists forbs but fewer ferns than forests' interiors. A buffered summer microclimate proved crucial for presence fern species. The contained thermophilous, disturbance‐tolerant, nutrient‐demanding basiphilous species, pattern strongly confirmed corresponding microclimate, soil light conditions understorey. Additionally, plots lower canopy cover higher availability numbers both specialists. Even though no significant interactions were between distance complexity, opposing additive indicated dense can be used buffer negative effects. Conclusion environment poses multifaceted filter which contributes differences community biodiversity conservation buffering effects, it will key maintain canopies near edges.

Abstract Question Ecological indicator values (EIVs) reflect species‘ optimal conditions on an environmental gradient, such as temperature. Averaged over a community, they are used to quantify thermophilization stemming from climate change, i.e. the reshuffling of communities toward more warm‐adapted species. In forests, understorey plant do not keep up with global warming and accumulate climatic debt. Although causes still debated, this thermal lag may be partly explained by forest microclimate buffering. For first time, we test whether community means EIVs able capture (here, under canopies) temperature across, or also within forests. Location 157 plots across three French deciduous forests covering large macroclimatic gradient. Methods To assess can infer mean range in measured air for ca. 1 year (10 months) sensors located m above ground. We surveyed bryophytes vascular plants 400‐m 2 plots, computed floristic ordinal‐scale (Ellenberg, Julve) degree‐scale (ClimPlant, Bryophytes Europe Traits) both continentality, annual range. Finally, fitted linear models could explain Results Vascular bryophyte successfully reflected differences temperatures but largely failed so variation did perform better than conditions. The ecological niche is one of the central concepts in plant ecology. Understanding which biological traits influence niches remains limited, preventing large-scale generalizations. Using a representative pool 94 herb-layer species frequently occurring Slovenian forest vegetation types and an extensive suite 28 functional traits, we tested whether serve as predictors for optimum width niche. Niche (mean) (standard deviation) each were derived from community-level indicator values six environmental gradients, i.e., light, temperature, continentality, moisture, soil reaction nutrients. We investigated relationships between parameters through random analysis to account relatively high trait correlations. Our results suggest that are related their traits. two best explained by similar set traits; however, relative importance differed substantially. Traits associated with disturbances (frequency severity), dispersal (seed mass, syndrome), leaf economics spectrum (specific area) life strategy (CSR scores) showed highest overall significance predicting width. Functional were, on average, better (average variance across all factors: 20.2%) than explained: 7.7%). Intraspecific variability, not considered this study, likely plays important role case analyses that, while impact same degree, it crucial consider representing different dimensions revealing leading patterns coordination. recommend should be larger spatial scale using broader understory plants Europe.

Abstract Aim Plant functional traits are frequently proposed as influential factors in species distribution. However, there is a gap assessing how plant resource‐economic relate to the size and shape of species' geographical range, what extent these relationships conserved over evolutionary history. Specifically, an acquisitive strategy (characterized by heightened metabolism, shorter lifespan quicker generation turnover) may promote isotropic range formations, resulting less elongated larger ranges. Here, I tested this link using data from 98 native European tree species. Location Palaearctic. Time period Present. Major taxa studied Trees. Methods used chorological maps quantify two independent attributes: area elongation. considered 28 linked resource‐use measured above‐ below‐ground organs. multi‐response phylogenetic mixed models calculate conservative trait correlation (CTC) phylogenetically (IND) component each with Results Range positively correlated resource strategies, while elongation strategies. This pattern was consistent across examined but statistically significant seven out traits, including specific leaf area, root mycorrhizal colonization. Traits related nutritional status exhibited weakest attributes. Significant correlations were more frequent IND often showed contrasting trends compared CTC. Main conclusions emerges relevant factor gain insights on shapes distribution, alongside established drivers such dispersal limitation climatic tolerance. Trait‐range driven processes leaving weak signature. These result direct selection, where impact attributes, or indirect effects, co‐variation ranges environmental niche optima.
