Memories are not perfect recordings of the past and can be subject to systematic biases. Memory distortions often caused by our experience what typically happens in a given situation. However, it is unclear whether memory for events biased knowledge that usually have predictable structure (a beginning, middle, an end). Using video clips everyday situations, we tested how interrupting at unexpected time points affects those ended. In four free recall experiments (1, 2, 4, 5), found just before salient piece action was completed, resulted false details about clip might We refer this as "event extension." On other hand, after one scene had ended new started, omissions true ending (Experiments 4 5). these effects were present, albeit attenuated, when testing shortly watching compared week later 5a 5b). Recognizing and remembering social information is a crucial cognitive skill. Neural patterns in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) support our ability to perceive others' interactions. However, despite prominence of interactions memory, neural basis still unknown. To fill this gap, we investigated brain mechanisms underlying memory during free spoken recall naturalistic movie. By applying machine learning-based fMRI encoding analyses densely labeled movie data found that subset STS activity evoked by viewing predicted responses not only held-out data, but also recall. These results provide first evidence reinstated response specific content its reactivation underlies remember findings further suggest contains representations are perceptually driven, more abstract or conceptual nature.

Abstract While recounting an experience, one can employ multiple strategies to transition from part the next. For instance, if event was learned out of linear order, recall events according time they were (temporal), similar (semantic), occurring nearby in (chronological), or produced by current (causal). To disentangle importance these factors, we had participants watch nonlinear narrative, Memento, under different task instructions and presentation orders. each scene film, also separately computed semantic causal networks. We then contrasted evidence for temporal, semantic, chronological, during recall. Critically, there stronger chronological than temporal strategies. Moreover, outperformed even when asked film presented underscoring fundamental nature structure scaffolding understanding organizing Nevertheless, still marginally predicted transitions, suggesting it operates as a weak signal presence more salient forms structure. Prior behavioral work showed that event structure plays a key role in our ability to mentally search through memories of continuous naturalistic experience. We hypothesized that, neurally, this mem- ory process involves division labor between slowly un- furling neocortical states representing knowledge and fast hippocampal-neocortical communication supports retrieval new information at transitions events. To test this, we tracked slow neural state-patterns sample ten patients under- going intracranial electroencephalography as they viewed movie then searched their structured in- terview. As answered questions ("after X, when does Y happen next?"), from movie-viewing were reinstated neocortex; during memory-search, unfurled forward di- rection. Moments state-transition marked by low-frequency power decreases cortex preceded hip- pocampus correlated with reinstatement. Connectivity-analysis revealed information-flow hippocampus underpinning state-transitions. Together, these results support hypothesis hippocampal processes bridge memory search.

Throughout our lives, we learn schemas that specify what types of events to expect in particular contexts and the temporal order which these usually occur. Here, first goal was investigate how such context-dependent structures are represented brain during processing temporally extended events. To accomplish this, ran a 2-day fMRI study (N = 40) exposed participants many unique animated videos weddings composed sequences rituals; each sequence originated from one two fictional cultures (North South), where rituals were shared across cultures, but transition structure between differed cultures. The results, obtained using representational similarity analysis, revealed is multiple ways parallel, including distinct neural representations for culture, sequences, past current within sequence. Our second test hypothesis schema scaffold memory specific details. In keeping with this hypothesis, found strength representation North/South wedding predicted subsequent episodic details wedding.

Hebbian plasticity has long dominated neurobiological models of memory formation. Yet, rules operating on one-shot episodic timescales rarely depend both pre- and postsynaptic spiking, challenging theory in this crucial regime. Here, we present an model governed by a simpler rule depending only presynaptic activity. We show that rule, capitalizing high-dimensional neural activity with restricted transitions, naturally stores episodes as paths through complex state spaces like those underlying world model. The resulting traces, which term path vectors, are highly expressive decodable odor-tracking algorithm. vectors robust alternatives to support sequential associative recall, along policy learning, shed light specific hippocampal rules. Thus, non-Hebbian is sufficient for flexible learning well-suited encode policies

Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of the world's population, exerting a substantial burden on affected individual, their families, and healthcare systems globally.
