Abstract Background Increasing evidence has demonstrated that an imbalance in the microbiota-gut-brain axis exerts essential effect on pathophysiology of depressive and anxiety disorders. Our previous research revealed timing inulin administration altered its influence CUMS-induced depression; however, it is still unclear if gut-brain primarily responsible for these effects. Results Serum metabolomics analysis showed treatment can alleviate inflammatory response CUMS-treated mice amino acid metabolic pathways were crucial anxiolytic antidepressant The time seemed to modify effects inulin, intervention evening was more pronounced improving metabolism inhibiting than morning treatment. In addition, significantly reduced serum glucose insulin levels. main differential metabolites, including fenofibric acid, 4’-Hydroxyfenoprofen glucuronide 5-(4-Hydroxybenzyl)thiazolidine-2,4-dione may play important roles ability inulin. Fecal microbiota transplantation confirmed alleviated anxiety- depression-like behaviors via axis. Conclusions results suggest effective alleviating metabolism. This study provides a new potential link between chrono-nutrition, which indicates appropriate better effect.
