Abstract Extensive efforts have been dedicated to deciphering the interactions associated with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, these developments are hampered by a lack of efficient strategies avoid beneficial synergies being offset harmful trade-offs. To fill gaps, we used causal diagnosis and network analysis methods construct 1302 directed networks SDGs for 31 provinces in China from 2000 2020. We observed dramatic offsetting effect SDG trade-offs 2020, approximately 27% trade-off indicator pairs turning into about 25% synergy our findings suggested that prioritising progress high-frequency indicators virtuous cycles could multiply positive systemic effects SDGs. Moreover, controlling transition passive active remains challenge advancing holistically.

Abstract In recent years, policy initiatives have been developed to promote sustainability. Although sustainable food production is an integral part of many national agricultural policies, this not the case for consumption. This article systematically reviews key elements consumption and evaluates how they align with existing indicators, specifically SDG 12, within context European Union. Through a cross‐referencing approach, identifies gaps possible improvements in indicator frameworks better capture We find that 12 targets are suitable assess progress While closely linked environmental economic issues, insufficient monitor Our findings suggest necessity enhanced or modified indicators encompass as well comprehensive definition latter effectively design evaluate polices on matter.

The accelerating pace of urbanization, coupled with changes in land-use patterns and the exacerbation extreme climatic events—marked by heightened unpredictability severity, particularly regions Global South—necessitates a thorough reevaluation urban governance management frameworks. In response to these challenges, it is essential for strategies integrate local socio-economic specificities while navigating inherent complexities issues, leveraging contextually appropriate resources within sustainability paradigm. this regard, contextualizing incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into planning frameworks crucial advancing sustainability. However, significant obstacles hinder their effective integration at scale, fast-evolving, resource-constrained settings. This study seeks address critical gap systematically examining barriers SDG sub-Saharan Africa. For purpose, Moundou, Chad, used as representative case study, reflecting both challenges opportunities region. A hybrid methodology underpins research, combining in-depth interviews key development stakeholders, detailed review strategic documents aligned SDGs, semi-structured questionnaires capture diverse perspectives. results reveal that institutional dimension constitutes 38.46% identified including limited capacity long-term planning, lack expertise, inadequate multisectoral coordination, among others. addition, economic socio-cultural dimensions each represent 23.08% barriers, encompassing issues such dependence on external funding, high cost green technologies, low public awareness, resistance change communities. Finally, data access ranks last, accounting 15.38%. To overcome implement mechanisms strengthen capacities, promote cross-sectoral collaboration, enhance cultivate culture adaptability innovation Furthermore, improving accessibility reinforcing financial are vital addressing comprehensively.

Abstract The sustainable development goals (SDGs) are presented as significantly interacted. Yet most studies only investigated the direct interactions of SDG targets, and indirect interactions, that is, interlinkages transmitted through one or more mediums, should also be considered to obtain accurate interaction estimation scientific policy decisions. We first made a methodological contribution by proposing plus‐minus decision‐making trial evaluation laboratory model, which can consider not synergies trade‐offs but ones. Then, based on this proposed method, we navigated complicated network across SDGs considering both find out key interactive ones with visually directed graph, weights each SDG, define best governance structures capitalize minimize trade‐offs. Results show that, when incorporating share synergy effect dominates total influence, taking up 98.33%, suggesting achievement 2030 Agenda facilitated interactions. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guide towards sustainability across a broad palette of aspects. Since their adoption by the United Nations in 2015, many organizations have started using them to relate own performance. However, there exists no consensus nor science-based methods for performing such assessments, hence bringing risk cherry-picking and arbitrary target-setting among 17 goals potentially compromising robustness, usefulness, credibility SDG assessment. To address this, we propose framework that enables systematically evaluate or select indicators assessing monitoring performance at different scales. A critical review indicator selection criteria was performed, forming basis recommendations existing criteria. Two separate applications are operationalized, namely evaluation sets new indicators, respectively. is tested demonstrated on two proof-of-concept cases representing global level company level. results demonstrate proposed allows decision-makers scopes, offering stronger scientifically founded reducing unintentional bias.
