Abstract Flavonoids are plant‐derived dietary components with a substantial impact on human health. Research has expanded massively since it began in the 1930s, and complex pathways involved bioavailability of flavonoids body now well understood. In recent years, been appreciated that gut microbiome plays major role flavonoid action, but much progress still needs to be made this area. Since first publications health effects flavonoids, their action is understood protect against various stresses, mechanism evolved from debunked simple direct antioxidant hypothesis into an understanding molecular targets enzymes specific cell types. This review traces development field over past 8 decades, indicates current state art, how was reached. Future recommendations based historical analysis (a) focus key areas (b) perform intervention studies focusing protective effects, (c) carry out cellular vitro experiments using appropriate cells together chemical form found at site action; could native compounds food for digestion intestine, conjugated metabolites blood after absorption small intestine cells, or forms tissues catabolism by microbiota.

This review summarizes available information on so far identified flavonoid-converting bacterial species strains as well enzymes catalyzing underlying reactions. majority described transformation are capable carrying out O-deglycosylation flavonoids. Other cleave less common flavonoid-C-glucosides and/or further degrade aglycones flavonols, flavanonols, flavones, flavanones, dihydrochalcones, isoflavones monomeric flavan-3-ols. To increase currently limited knowledge this field, should be continued using culture-dependent screening or isolation procedures molecular approaches based sequence enzymes.

Covering: 2000 up to late 2017This review is focussed upon the acyl-quinic acids, most studied group within ca. 400 chlorogenic acids so far reported. The first of which was characterised in 1846, are a diverse plant-derived compounds produced principally through esterification an hydroxycinnamic acid and 1l-(-)-quinic acid. Topics addressed this include confusing nomenclature, quantification characterisation by NMR MS, biosynthesis role planta, occurrence coffee, their transformation during roasting delivery beverage. Coffee major human dietary source world-wide consideration given absorption metabolism upper gastrointestinal tract, colon where microbiota play key formation catabolites. Evidence on potential vivo metabolites catabolites promote consumer's health evaluated.

Over the past few years, interest in health research has increased, making improved a global goal for 2030. The purpose of such is to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing across individuals all ages. It been shown that nutrition plays key role prevention some chronic diseases as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer. One aspects characterises diet high intake vegetables fruits, both are flavonoid-rich foods. Flavonoids one main subclasses dietary polyphenols possess strong antioxidant activity anti-carcinogenic properties. Moreover, population-based studies have described relationship between cancer risk flavonoid intake. In this context, review was provide an updated evaluation association different types cancers We analysed relevant epidemiological from January 2008 March 2019 using PUBMED Web Science databases. summary, concludes associated with reduced cancer, gastric, breast, prostate, colorectal cancers.

Different types of fermented foods such as chongkukjang, doenjang, ganjang, gochujang and kimchi are plentifully available widely consumed in north eastern Asian countries including Korea. Among them, is one the most popular Korean traditional food. It prepared by fermenting baechu cabbage together with other vegetables lactic acid bacteria functional potential. Many ingredients added to enhance its taste, flavor, nutritional value, texture etc. A number involved fermentation kimchi, but dominant species process. The addition sub formation different by-products during eventually leads eradication putrefactive pathogenic bacteria, also increase functionalities, nutraceutical potential kimchi. Kimchi possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, antiobesity, probiotic properties, cholesterol reduction, antiaging properties. This review considers recent investigations on the bioavailability of anthocyanins and flavanones. Both flavonoids are significant dietary components considered to be poorly bioavailable, as only low levels phase II metabolites appear in circulatory system excreted urine. However, when lower molecular weight phenolic aromatic ring-fission catabolites, produced primarily by action colonic microbiota, taken into account, it is evident that flavanones much more bioavailable than previously envisaged. The metabolic events which these subjected they pass along gastrointestinal tract absorbed prior their rapid elimination renal excretion highlighted. Studies impact other food probiotic intake flavonoid summarized, bioactivity catabolites assayed using a variety vitro model systems.

Anthocyanins (ACNs) are plant secondary metabolites from the flavonoid family. Red to blue fruits major dietary sources of ACNs (up 1 g/100 g FW), being cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy3G) one most widely distributed. Cy3G confers a red hue fruits, but its content in raspberries and strawberries is low. It has good radical scavenging capacity (RSC) against superoxide not hydroxyl radicals, oxidative potential pH-dependent (58 mV/pH unit). After intake, can be metabolized (phases I, II) by oral epithelial cells, absorbed gastric epithelium (1%–10%) it gut-transformed (phase II & microbial metabolism), reaching bloodstream (<1%) urine (about 0.02%) low amounts. In humans Caco-2 Cy3G’s protocatechuic acid phloroglucinaldehyde which also subjected entero-hepatic recycling, although caffeic peonidin-3-glucoside seem strictly produced large bowel renal tissues. Solid evidence supports bioactivity as DNA-RSC, gastro protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic chemo-preventive an epigenetic factor, exerting protection Helicobacter pylori infection, age-related diseases, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome cancer. Most relevant mechanisms include RSC, action, competitive protein-binding enzyme inhibition. These other novel aspects on physical-chemistry, foodomics, health effects discussed.

Natural flavonoids such as quercetin, (+)catechin and rutin well four methoxylated derivatives of quercetin used models were investigated to elucidate their impact on the oxidant antioxidant status human red blood cells (RBCs). The these compounds against metal toxicity was studied antiradical activities with DPPH assay. Antihemolytic experiments conducted excess Fe, Cu Zn (400 μM), (malondialdehyde, carbonyl proteins) (reduced glutathione, catalase activity) markers evaluated. results showed that Fe have highest prooxidant effect (37 33% hemolysis, respectively). Quercetin, exhibited strong properties toward but this decreased respect ions. However, a weak at flavonoid concentration (200 while observed lowest (100 μM).
