The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is a major pest of trees as it transmits Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). composition host's microbiota can affect the evolution and ecological distribution host. This study monitored compositional shifts in through all life stages (egg, nymph 1–5 stages, adult) by next-generation sequencing quantitative real-time PCR. There were clear differences both α- β-diversity stages. Microbiota diversity was markedly higher 2–5 than adult, egg, 1 Proteobacteria dominant D. citri, representing > 97.5% total bacterial community, Profftella armature genus Data from qPCR analysis showed an exponential increase populations three citri endosymbionts: armature, Carsonella ruddii, Wolbachia. gut bacterium Pantoea present but 2-5 substantially differed among egg–nymph 1, nymphs 2–5, adult Therefore, we successfully characterized dynamics thus identified shift during cycle 16S rRNA gene Moreover, suggested that acquired ability to bear CLas at stage. enhances our understanding microbial establishment developing provides reference resource for identification potential biocontrol approaches against this pest.

ABSTRACT Drosophila suzukii Matsumura is an invasive species of vinegar fly that has become a prominent pest berries and other soft-skinned fruits. Unlike most species, female D. flies lay their eggs in ripening ripe fruits larvae develop within the fruit. To understand how utilize fruits, which usually have low levels protein, we investigated microbiota field-captured laboratory-reared further examined combined influence diet microbes on host fitness. Field-captured were associated with diverse microbiota, varied significantly sampling location season. In contrast, possessed strikingly lower bacterial abundance diversity. A comparison conventionally reared (CR) germ-free (GF) revealed does not alter its development but decreases life span under conditions nutrient-sufficient diet. However, essential for strawberry-based or blueberry-based fruit diets. This developmental failure could be rescued by reassociation single fungal addition high quantity heat-killed microbes. addition, found proteins are limiting respect to fruit-based diets GF show signs protein starvation. Eco-evolutionary dynamics of microbiotas at the macroscale level are largely driven by ecological variables. The diet and living environment oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, diversify during development, providing a natural system to explore convergence, divergence, repeatability in patterns microbiota as function host diet, phylogeny, environment. Here, we characterized 47 B. dorsalis individuals from three distinct populations 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. A significant deviation was found within larvae, pupae, adults each population. Pupae were an increased bacterial taxonomic functional diversity. Principal components analysis showed that clearly separated into clusters. Acetobacteraceae, Lactobacillaceae, Enterobacteriaceae predominant families larval adult samples, PICRUSt indicated phosphoglycerate mutases transketolases significantly enriched while mutases, transketolases, proteases adults, which may support digestive larvae adults. abundances Intrasporangiaceae, Dermabacteraceae (mainly Brachybacterium) Brevibacteriaceae Brevibacterium) higher antibiotic transport ATP-binding protein permease pathways there well, indicating defensive pupae. Overall, differences likely contribute nutrient assimilation environments.

Abstract After its initial discovery in California 2008, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura has become one of the most important invasive agricultural pest insects across climate zones much Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Populations D. have demonstrated notable behavioral physiological plasticity, adapting to diverse environmental climatic conditions, interspecific competition, novel food sources, potential predators. This adaptability plasticity enabled rapid range expansion diversified niche use by suzukii, making it a species particularly suited changing habitats conditions. article reviews factors evidence that influence promotes this species’ invasiveness.

Carpophilus truncatus (Murray), a nitidulid beetle, has become major threat to almond industries globally. While there are existing mass trapping strategies for other species, an effective lure this nut-attacking pest is urgently required. This study leverages our knowledge of the chemical ecology Carpophilus, particularly its relationship with gut-associated yeasts, develop new semiochemical attractant C. truncatus. Wickerhamomyces rabaulensis was identified as predominant yeast in field-collected Field bioassays demonstrated that traps baited live cultures W. captured more beetles compared those Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, from stone fruit-attacking species. Yeasts play an important role in nutrition physiology and host attraction of many Drosophila species, associations with various yeast species are documented for several drosophilid flies. The pest suzukii (Matsumura) has a predominant association the Hanseniaspora uvarum. However, research not been conducted on nutritional yeasts associated D. (spotted wing drosophila). Therefore, this study, we determined whether dietary was nutritionally relevant closely positively affected life-history traits. Our results confirm crucial larval development survival suzukii. Furthermore, found specific effects H. uvarum Candida sp. survival. Drosophila suzukii differs from other melanogaster group members in their proclivity for laying eggs fresh fruit rather than fermenting fruits.
