Diabetes
mellitus
(DM)
is
a
chronic
metabolic
disorder
characterized
by
hyperglycemia,
responsible
for
the
onset
of
several
long-term
complications.
Recent
evidence
suggests
that
cognitive
dysfunction
represents
an
emerging
complication
DM,
but
underlying
molecular
mechanisms
are
still
obscure.
Dopamine
(DA),
neurotransmitter
essentially
known
its
relevance
in
regulation
behavior
and
movement,
modulates
function,
too.
Interestingly,
alterations
dopaminergic
system
have
been
observed
DM.
This
review
aims
to
offer
comprehensive
overview
most
relevant
experimental
results
assessing
DA’s
role
highlighting
presence
DM
supporting
glucotoxicity
DM-associated
impairment.
