Embryonic development is a critical period for phenotype formation. Environmental variation during embryonic can induce changes in postnatal phenotypes of animals. The thyroxine secretion and aerobic metabolic activity small birds are important closely related to their winter survival. In the context climate change, it necessary determine whether temperature incubation leads developmental plasticity these cold responsive phenotypes. We incubated Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) eggs at 36.8 °C, 37.8 38.8 raised chicks 35-day old 22 °C with same raising conditions, then all quails were exposed gradually dropping environment (from 15 0 °C). After treatment, serum T3 level, resting rate, skeletal muscle liver metabolomes measured. levels significantly lower group higher compared group. rate was Compared group, metabolites involved tricarboxylic acid cycle lipid oxidation metabolism fatty biosynthesis muscles but These results indicate that lead physiological Higher may impair capacity coping challenge.

To address climate change, the United States is offering consumers incentives to purchase electric vehicles containing domestically derived lithium batteries. New extraction facilities required supply this may have environmental impacts, including impacts on biodiversity. reveal potential we mapped 72 proposed sites across contiguous and overlaid these with data for species occurrences, conservation value, habitat, land management designations. We found that vary by site. The abundance of resources in States, combined large differences among sites, suggests decision-makers be able guide least impactful first. aid process, recommend field-based reconnaissance a cumulative analysis biodiversity order contextualize activity within larger scope use change.

Abstract Climate change is often described as an existential risk to the human species, but this terminology has generally been avoided in climate-justice literature analytic philosophy. I investigate source of disconnect and explore prospects for incorporating idea climate into debates about justice. The concept does not feature prominently these discussions, suggest, because assumptions that structure ‘ideal’ accounts justice ensure prospect extinction-level threat arise. Given persistent noncompliance with mitigation duties, however, we have reason revisit assumptions. argue most promising way theories account significance look practices protest resistance which a concern extinction or global catastrophe frequently given expression.

Humanity faces a myriad of existential technology, geopolitical, and ecological risks. The paper analyzes the possibility that negative shocks superimpose multiply their effects, leading to catastrophic macro-dynamics. Methodologically, this presents rare, quantitative scenario model superimposed upon narrative scenarios where cascading economic effects 19 indicators growth or decline are projected into 2075. These map onto five scenarios, subsequently re-combined study plausible risk events coming pass in 50 years period between 2025 Results indicate even case deeply singular events, world would eventually recover within 25 years, as has historically been case. exception is event several short order around midpoint 50-year timeline, escalation create formidable cascades. protracted depression no visible recovery result. However, if we assume modest interaction effect, with just 3-5 co-occurring catastrophes, result becomes path towards humanity’s extinction based on alone. implications humanity either needs avoid significant at all costs identify novel ways compared previous depressions. Given amount assumptions they rely upon, these projections carry degree uncertainty. Systemic risks derive from a mix of economic, technological, socio political, and ecological factors. Inherently interdisciplinary, the study systemic risk draws on financial shock models, operations research, global health, foresight, management, military strategy, assessment, sociology, disaster security studies, science technology existential (X-risk) research as well AI biorisk communities. The requires developing transdisciplinary tools that can better integrate insights drawn these disparate fields despite high uncertainty. Nevertheless, there remains no overarching framework specifically formulated for beyond economics. This paper reviews this body work aiming to begin formulating an approach integrated leading up or X-risks, possibility human extinction. Given threaten entire societies might cascade across systems, various should align factors vocabulary combine increase humanity's resilience.
