The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world to its core and provoked an overnight exodus of developers who normally worked in office setting working from home. magnitude this shift factors that have accompanied new unplanned work go beyond what software engineering community previously understood be remote work. To find out how their productivity were affected, we distributed two surveys (with a combined total 3,634 responses answered all required questions) weeks apart understand presence prevalence benefits, challenges, opportunities improve special circumstance From our thematic qualitative analysis statistical quantitative analysis, there is dichotomy developer experiences influenced by many different (that for some are benefit, while others challenge). For example, benefit was being close family members but having share space interrupting focus, challenge. Our led powerful narratives respondents revealed scale at which these exist provide insights as future (pandemic) can evolve.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a natural experiment of an unprecedented scale as companies closed their offices and sent employees to work from home. Many managers were concerned that engineers would not be able effectively home, or lack the motivation do so, they lose control even notice when things go wrong. As many announced post-COVID permanent remote-work hybrid home/office policies, question what can expected software who home becomes more relevant. To understand nature telework we analyze evidence perceived changes in productivity comparing office before with during thirteen empirical surveys practitioners. We analyzed data six corporate conducted four Scandinavian combined results seven published studying industrial settings. In addition, sought explanations for variation among studied through qualitative analysis open-ended questions interviews.Combined 7686 points suggest though on average has changed significantly, there are developers report being productive, less productive working Positively affected individuals some form large groups respondents (up 50%) mention benefiting better organization work, increased flexibility focus. Yet, equally negatively 51%) complain about challenges related remote teamwork collaboration, well emotional issues, distractions poor environment equipment. Finally, positive trends found longitudinal surveys, i.e., developers' later months show than those earlier months. We conclude behind "no change" lays experiences, which means might everyone. is encouraging, it shows pessimistic influenced by initial experiences crisis. At end, put forward lessons learned inspire new post-pandemic policies.

The COVID-19 outbreak has admittedly caused interruptions to production, transportation, and mobility, therefore, having a significant impact on the global supply demand chain's well-functioning. But what happened companies developing digital services, such as software? How enforced Working-From-Home (WFH) mode impacted their ability deliver software, if at all? This article shares our findings from monitoring WFH during 2020 in an international software company with engineers located Sweden, USA, UK. We analyzed different aspects of productivity, developer job satisfaction well-being, activity, communication collaboration, efficiency flow based archives commit data, calendar invites, Slack communication, internal reports experiences, 30 interviews carried out April/May September 2020. add more objective evidence existing studies vast majority which are self-reported productivity early months pandemic. find that continue committing code carrying daily duties, routines adjust "the new norm". Our key message is can work home quickly tactical approaches changes unprecedented scale. Further, its benefits, including better work-life balance, improved flow, quality distributed meetings events. Yet, not challenge free: everybody feels equally productive working home, hours for many increased, while physical socialization, pairing opportunities connect unfamiliar colleagues decreased. Information sharing meeting patterns also changed. Finally, experiences gained pandemic will have lasting future workplace. results company-wide survey suggest only 9% return office full time. concludes InterSoft's strategy anywhere (WFX), list useful adjustments WFH.

Abstract Objectives To explore changes in quality of life and perceived productivity, focusing on the effects working from home during first COVID-19 50-day mitigation period Austria. Methods We conducted an Austrian-representative online survey ( N = 1010) self-reported life- work-related (March 16 through May 1 2020) compared to situation before. used multinominal logistic regression models identify correlates improved/decreased entire sample, productivity a subsample population 686). also calculated age- multivariable-adjusted ORs 95% CIs by work status. Results During period, improved 17.5%, but decreased 20.7% general Austrian population; at increased 12.7%, 30.2% population. Working was associated with (vs. none, partially: OR 2.07, CI 1.09–3.91; all time: 3.69, 1.86–7.29). In contrast, seemed decrease when people worked 1.42, 0.86–2.35; 1.48, 0.85–2.58). related benefits were not equally distributed among gender, age, educational attainment. Conclusions A transition more flexibility workplace hours for employees could have important positive consequences family professional life, stakeholders, public health, ultimately environment.

Following the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, software engineers' daily life was disrupted abruptly forced into remote working from home. This change deeply impacted typical routines, affecting both well-being productivity. Moreover, this will have long-lasting effects in industry, with several tech companies allowing their employees to work home indefinitely if they wish do so. Therefore, it is crucial analyze understand how a day looks like when individual activities affect developers' We performed two-wave longitudinal study involving almost 200 globally carefully selected professionals, inferring perceived well-being, productivity, other relevant psychological social variables. Results suggest that time engineers spent doing specific similar office. However, we also found some significant mean differences. The amount developers on each activity unrelated conclude remotely not per se challenge for organizations or developers.

The novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has magnified the issue of financial insecurity. However, its effect on individual-organizational relations and, consequently, organizational performance remains understudied. Thus, purpose this study was to explore spillover insecurity burnout-disengagement relationship during pandemic. authors investigate in particular whether influences moonlighting employees and also mediating disengagement between burnout interaction (i.e., mediated-moderation). This collected responses from 162 public private sector who are engaged activities Malaysia. results partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) revealed greater levels associated with work disengagement. analysis interaction-moderation showed that when rises, increases among moonlighters. Using PROCESS macro model, displayed as a predictor extra-role via moderated (financial insecurity) mediation (work disengagement) relationship. Going forward, not only opens new avenues for research into consequences COVID-19 but calls managers take proactive steps mitigate negative pandemic keep them profession.

This study aims to clarify the effect of occupational stress and changes in work environment on non-healthcare workers’ (HCWs) mental health during third wave COVID-19 pandemic Japan. A web-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted from 16 17 December 2020. Data 807 non-HCWs were included. We evaluated using Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (GJSQ). Depressive anxiety symptoms assessed Japanese version Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale, respectively. collected demographic variables, work-related variables associated with COVID-19. The adjusted odds ratios for depressive groups estimated multivariate logistic regression analyses, all COVID-19-related six subdivided GJSQ subscales. results confirm a relationship between variance workload, job future ambiguity, social support coworkers, having contact patients, symptoms. Paying attention workload at workplace individual perspectives, promoting among coworkers online communication tools, reducing will be useful decreasing non-HCWs.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Scrum teams had to switch abruptly from a traditional working setting into an enforced home one. This abrupt impact on software projects. Thus, it is necessary understand how potential future disruptive events will Agile teams' ability deliver successful projects while home. To investigate this problem, we used two-phased Multi-Method study. In first phase, uncover impacted practitioners through semi-structured interviews. Then, in second propose theoretical model that test and generalize using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) surveying 138 engineers who worked within We concluded all latent variables identified our are reliable, hypotheses significant. paper emphasizes importance of supporting three innate psychological needs autonomy, competence, relatedness environment. conclude use both contribute project success, with acting as mediator.
