Following the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, daily lives software engineers were heavily disrupted as they abruptly forced to work remotely from home. To better understand contrast typical working days in this new reality with pre-pandemic times, we conducted one exploratory (N = 192) confirmatory study 290) recruited remotely. Specifically, build on self-determination theory evaluate whether how specific activities are associated engineers' satisfaction productivity. explore subject domain, first ran a two-wave longitudinal study. We found that time spent (e.g., coding, bugfixing, helping others) while home was similar times. Also, amount developers each activity unrelated their general well-being, perceived productivity, other variables such basic needs. Our activity-specific much autonomy had during coding) do predict productivity but not by activity-independent resilience or good work-life balance. Interestingly, significantly higher when others lower bugfixing. Finally, discuss implications for engineers, management, researchers. In particular, active company policies support developers' need autonomy, relatedness, competence appear particularly effective WFH context.

In early 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced employees in tech companies worldwide to abruptly transition from working offices their homes. During two years of predominantly home, and managers alike formed expectations about what post-pandemic life should look like. Many are experimenting with new work policies that balance employee- manager regarding where, when how be done future. this article, we gather experiences trend remote based on synthesis 22 company-internal surveys employee preferences for WFH, 26 17 sites, covering 12 countries total. Our results threefold. First, through policies, all formally give more flexibility time location. Second, there is a great variation much willing yield employees. The paper details different formulations adopted document extent permitted exceptions, relocation permits authorisation procedures. Third, change psychological contract between managers, where option home converted an exclusive perk could choose few, core privilege feel they entitled to. Finally, indications as learn solicit feedback efficiency chosen strategies, will see further developments changes concerning whenever wherever grant. Through these findings, contributes growing literature trends emerging spells out practical implications onwards.

The COVID-19 outbreak has admittedly caused interruptions to production, transportation, and mobility, therefore, having a significant impact on the global supply demand chain's well-functioning. But what happened companies developing digital services, such as software? How enforced Working-From-Home (WFH) mode impacted their ability deliver software, if at all? This article shares our findings from monitoring WFH during 2020 in an international software company with engineers located Sweden, USA, UK. We analyzed different aspects of productivity, developer job satisfaction well-being, activity, communication collaboration, efficiency flow based archives commit data, calendar invites, Slack communication, internal reports experiences, 30 interviews carried out April/May September 2020. add more objective evidence existing studies vast majority which are self-reported productivity early months pandemic. find that continue committing code carrying daily duties, routines adjust "the new norm". Our key message is can work home quickly tactical approaches changes unprecedented scale. Further, its benefits, including better work-life balance, improved flow, quality distributed meetings events. Yet, not challenge free: everybody feels equally productive working home, hours for many increased, while physical socialization, pairing opportunities connect unfamiliar colleagues decreased. Information sharing meeting patterns also changed. Finally, experiences gained pandemic will have lasting future workplace. results company-wide survey suggest only 9% return office full time. concludes InterSoft's strategy anywhere (WFX), list useful adjustments WFH.

Abstract Time is central to many debates about hybrid work‐ the impact on speed and productivity, commute times, synchronisation of work. However, we argue that time often over‐simplified in extant work literature tends ignore temporal concepts capture inherently complex, multi‐faceted, subtle, socially embedded nature time. To address this issue, conducted studies five teams across two large organisations. The paper contributes current research by (i) illustrating various may be considered design environments, as well considering or not them; (ii) how these a physical space can augmented digital space, rather than assuming should simply represent physical; (iii) providing framework for consideration time–aware We hope spark scientific interest studying nuances but also aspects other areas.
