Research in the past decade has highlighted nuances of adolescent decision making. In this review article, we summarize several themes evident field developmental science including redefinition adolescence and ways which decision-making capabilities converge with or diverge from those adults. While process is similar for adolescents adults contexts that encourage deliberation reflection, differ preclude vis-à-vis high emotional arousal. We also discuss reconceptualization behavior, risk taking, as adaptive. That is, characteristics adolescence, impulsivity, importance peers, novelty seeking, are normative, evolutionarily advantageous, essential positive development. these features manifest negative, health-compromising (e.g., risky driving criminal behavior), they foster growth exploration. conclude a discussion potential avenues future research.

Abstract Risk‐taking includes both negative and positive risky behaviors, but little is known about how risk‐taking occur simultaneously. This study examined profiles of Asian American Non‐Asian emerging adults ( N = 401; M age 20.68; 68.30% women) their demographic cultural factor correlates. Three emerged: Moderate Negative Positive, Low High Negative/Average Positive. Americans were most likely to belong in the The Positive profile was associated with stronger emotion control values, whereas higher humility values. These findings underscore role beliefs shaping distinct patterns among adults.

Impulsive and risky decision-making peaks in adolescence, is consistently associated with the neurodevelopmental disorder Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), regardless of age. In this brief review, we demonstrate similarity theoretical models explaining impulsive that originate two relatively distinct literatures (i.e., on adolescence ADHD). We summarize research thus far conclude presence ADHD during further exacerbates tendency already present adolescents to make decisions. also much still unknown about developmental trajectories individuals regard decision making, therefore provide several hypotheses warrant longitudinal research.

In this review, we describe multiple pathways that may lead to risk-taking in adolescence. We review behavioral and neuroimaging studies showing heightened tendencies associated neural reward activity mid late adolescence, but evidence points risk taking as highly context sample dependent. Risk-taking behavior is particularly widespread during adolescence, and negatively impacts the healthy growth social adaptation of adolescents. Utilizing problem-behavior theory (PBT) family stress model (FSM), current study examined relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) adolescents' risk-taking behavior, as well mediating role psychological capital self-control. A total 1,156 Chinese adolescent students (Mage = 15.51, 48% boys) completed a series questionnaires anonymously. The results showed that: (1) Socioeconomic was correlated with behavior; (2) Both self-control mediated SES independently; (3) Psychological also adolescents sequentially. This reveals internal mechanism adolescence provides theoretical support empirical evidence for preventing reducing such in this age group.
