Ecosystem restoration efforts reflect shared human values and a common vision for the future. Consequently, public approval is critical new initiatives to achieve their social ecological goals. Yet, research typically focuses on over aspects, can overlook key factors that enable projects. Allowing widespread community engagement help establish legitimacy projects, identify perceptions features of importance. Australia's largest reef restoration, recover lost oyster reefs, an emerging socio-ecological success story. This initiative in South Australia progressed foundation engagement, using consultation process local's surrounding restoration. An online forum captured 1500 responses, which 600 written responses were submitted analysed concerns. Overall, we documented strong support ongoing restorations, as perceived array social, environmental, economic, wellbeing benefits. Public reflected understanding how benefits inspire ones, firm belief restored reefs could improve coastline betterment. These findings show early involvement helped generate license government pursue work, local communities' connection place conservation engagement. Prioritising development supportive platform, through maintaining coastal accessibility within ocean governance goals, enhance value marine spaces.

First introduced in the early 2000s, concept of ocean literacy has evolved recent years, not least since its inclusion as a mechanism for change within United Nations Ocean Decade's goals. Building on definitions literacy, there been increasing recognition range additional dimensions which contribute to an individual or collective sense 'ocean literacy'. Drawing existing research, and parallel supporting concepts, e.g., marine citizenship, connectedness, public perceptions this paper proposes ten literacy: knowledge, communication, behaviour, awareness, attitudes, activism, emotional connection, access experience, adaptive capacity trust transparency, recommends expanding previously recognised dimensions, bid ensure that encompasses diverse knowledges, values experiences. The provides useful framework ongoing highlights aspects have received limited focus date.

Marine ecosystems and their associated biodiversity sustain life on Earth hold intrinsic value. Critical marine ecosystem services include maintenance of global oxygen carbon cycles, production food energy, sustenance human wellbeing. However are swiftly being degraded due to the unsustainable use environments a rapidly changing climate. The fundamental challenge for future is therefore safeguard biodiversity, function, adaptive capacity whilst continuing provide vital resources population. Here, we foresighting/hindcasting consider two plausible futures towards 2030: business-as-usual trajectory (i.e. continuation current trends), more sustainable but technically achievable in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals. We identify key drivers that differentiate these alternative develop an action pathway desirable, future. Key achieving will be establishing integrative across jurisdictions sectors), management supports equitable stewardship environments. Conserving require recalibrating our social, financial, industrial relationships environment. While requires long-term planning commitment beyond 2030, immediate needed avoid tipping points avert trajectories decline. By acting now optimise protection ecosystems, building upon existing technologies, conserving remaining can create best opportunity 2030 beyond.

Nicole M. Ardoin, Ryan J. O’Connor, and Alison W. Bowers. In the social sciences, concept of “place” plays a large role in how humans relate to their environment. History culture, as well nuances human behavior, often revolve around person’s sense place belonging. Rather than assuming people are separate from nature, is common western science, this approach views fully engaged nature. By probing these connections between place, one can foster engagement individuals communities characterizing problems framing pathways solutions that promote sustainability marine socio-ecological systems. Deep scholarship well-developed case studies, presented here, support emerging thinking.

Insights into how public audiences perceive and relate to the ocean are pivotal successful societal engagement integration of human dimensions in marine conservation. Perceptions research explores people understand, value or engage with an environment, issue management response, context conservation, provides crucial insights for development, delivery evaluation effective conservation interventions. This review 349 peer reviewed studies current state perceptions ocean. Using extensive data extraction process, examined geographical spread research, topics focus, methods used. The identifies gaps activity, opportunities maximizing impact future Key findings include evidence that rate is growing, 59% published between 2013–2017. However, a clear skew evident, majority being undertaken higher income countries. Furthermore, there has been tendency focus on charismatic species, issues spaces human-ocean interaction (e.g., beaches), highlighting significant themes currently covered by research. An additional gap identified underutilization available explore complexity perceptions. In bid address these gaps, paper concludes series recommendations designed stimulate support as fundamental success efforts. While may be young, growing effort evidenced this gives optimism realizing its potential continuing improve effectively
