Abstract Coral reefs are of paramount importance in marine ecosystems, where they provide support for a large part the biodiversity. Being quite sensitive to global changes, therefore prime targets biodiversity conservation policies. However, such goals require accurate species identification, which notoriously difficult get these highly morphologically variable organisms, rich cryptic species. There is an acute need easy-to-use and resolutive diagnostic molecular markers. Abstract Aim The symbioses between corals and endosymbiotic dinoflagellates have been described as a flexible relationship whose dynamics could serve source of resilience for coral reef ecosystems. However, the factors that drive establishment maintenance this co‐evolutionary remain unclear. We examined environmental geographical structuring dinoflagellate communities in wide‐ranging Indo‐Pacific to begin address gap. Location Djibouti, Oman, Taiwan French Polynesia. Taxon Cauliflower ( Pocillopora spp.), (family Symbiodiniaceae). Methods analysed publicly available amplicon sequence data from nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2, originating spp. also compiled such sea surface temperature (SST) time since last local mass bleaching event. ran generalized least squares models, PERMANOVAs indicator species analyses, understand how thermal regimes distances impacted spp.'s Symbiodiniaceae community composition. Results Sea was most important factor driving differences, with largest effect size statistically significant factors. When focusing on individual genera, SST likewise factor. Our analyses revealed specimens had recently bleached were characterized by roughly equal proportions Cladocopium Durusdinium spp., while not similar proportion those bleached, but showed reduction deficiency made up presence Symbiodinium Main Conclusions provide further support hypothesis coral's facilitate host stress. work is direct conversation larger body biogeography literature highlights can impact contemporary population structure, even marine taxa widespread distributions.

Pocillopora tuahiniensis sp. nov. is described based on mitochondrial and nuclear genomic data, algal symbiont genetic geographic isolation, its distribution pattern within reefs that distinct from other sympatric species (Johnston et al. 2022a, b). Mitochondrial data reveal P. a unique species, sister to verrucosa, in clade different of meandrina 2022a). However, the gross situ colony appearance cannot easily be differentiated verrucosa or at Moorea. By sequencing mtORF region, can distinguished species. has so far been sampled French Polynesia, Ducie Island, Rapa Nui (Armstrong 2023; Edmunds 2016; Forsman 2013; Glin 2017; Mayfield 2015; Oury 2021; Voolstra 2023). On fore Moorea, very abundant 10 m one most common these depths 2022b). It also found much lower abundance shallow reef back lagoon. The holotype deposited Smithsonian Institution as USNM-SI 1522390 Genbank accession number OP418359.

Abstract Aim Efficiently protecting species requires knowing their ecological, life‐history and reproductive traits. This is particularly decisive for scleractinian corals, key components of coral reefs, which are experiencing critical declines. Yet connectivity remains insufficiently documented. Here, we focused on four distinct the genus Pocillopora found in diverse habitats southwestern Indian Ocean presenting various strategies. We aimed to understand whether these traits affect connectivity. Location Archipelagos islands Ocean. Taxon spp. Methods used target capture collect single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from over a thousand colonies sampled across nine localities. From ca. 1400 SNPs retained per species, Bayesian clustering methods, networks demographic inferences were applied first infer population genetic structure each then history population. Results All exhibited almost same structuring pattern, reflecting ecoregions (Madagascar surrounding vs. Mascarene Islands). However, differentiation was stronger ( F ST about 10 times higher) P. acuta , inhabiting more enclosed habitats, such as lagoons shallow waters, reproducing mainly asexually. Similarly, all populations, except those showed signature expansion 100,000 years ago, following penultimate glacial period. Main Conclusions These results indicate reduced gene flow between Madagascar Islands, probably linked currents, suggesting that should be considered independently when setting up conservation plans. In addition, shared histories reflect populations have met environmental constraints reacted similarly, something light ongoing rapid climate change.
