The exploitation of resources and industrialized societal activities has resulted in global freshwater contamination, which is a serious environmental concern. Climate variability exerts significant influence on the metal concentrations water sources. monitoring surface systems amidst climate change received limited attention, especially southern Africa. Therefore, objective this study to evaluate temporal variations seasonal patterns that impact levels Kaapmuiden River. results show river observed higher iron autumn season 2021 2016, recording 0.90 mg/l 0.64 mg/l, respectively. ABSTRACT Anthropogenically accelerated metal pollution of lotic systems draining mining landscapes remains a global concern due to its non‐degradability and ecotoxic nature. Nevertheless, the efficacy macrophytes as indicators remediators metal(loid) pollutants in aquatic ecosystems regions is recognised globally. However, mineral‐rich Central African Copperbelt (CACB), there limited research on effectiveness for management. Therefore, this study investigated phytopotential Typha domingensis Pers. (Typhaceae), nature‐based approach managing CACB. A total 252 samples each sediment T. were collected monthly between May 2022 April 2023 from seven streams Kansanshi sub‐catchment CACB analysed evaluate spatiotemporal variability phytoindication phytoremediation potential As, Cu, Pb Zn stream sediments. Metal(loid)s at 71% predominantly accumulated below‐ground biomass with mean concentrations 3–6 mg/kg 9–259 25–36 38–69 Zn. The BAF was above 1 As (0.8–2.6), (10.7–24.3) (1.4–4.3), indicating an accumulator these elements but excluder Cu (BAF < 1). Additionally, TF (1.5–2.0), (1.4–1.5) (1.0–2.0), macrophyte's extraction efficacy. For (TF 1), translocation characterised phytostabiliser. Similar seasonal trends also observed. response phytoindicator phytoremediator contaminants sediments should be considered management CACB's ecosystems.

Abstract This review elucidated the recent advances in integrating microalgal communities monitoring metal pollution aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also highlighted potential incorporating microalgae as bioindicators emerging technologies, identified research gaps, and suggested directions for further biomonitoring pollution. Reputable online scholarly databases were used to identify articles published between January 2000 June 2023 synthesis. Results indicated that integrated either individually or combined with other bioindicators, mainly macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, fish, alongside physicochemical monitoring. There was a significantly low level integration (< 1%) SSA compared geographical regions. Microalgal employed assess compliance (76%), diagnosis (38%), early-warning systems (38%) ecological health status. About 14% studies eDNA, while such remote sensing, artificial intelligence, biosensors, are yet be incorporated. Nevertheless, there is aforementioned technologies SSA. Future region should consider standardisation synchronisation integrative embrace “Citizen Science” concept at national regional scales. Graphical abstract

Both natural and anthropogenic activities are responsible for heavy metal abundance in the environment. Due to high persistence, metals can accumulate remain sediment very long periods, becoming a source of contaminants aquatic biota. Within small urbanized watercourse catchments, accumulation bottom sediments takes place be adopted as an efficient indicator monitoring pollution levels sources environments. Tiber River, most polluted river among 20 longest Italian rivers, has different tributaries distributed from north south Rome city. The aim study was evaluate water six River through use land cover, physico-chemical parameters geochemical multi-index (Concentration factor, Pollution Load index, Enrichment factor Geoaccumulation index). results indicate that general contamination is moderate threshold values exceeded only by some sites. As regards indices enrichment factors, it been seen sampling sites have specific (As, Hg, Pb). A more compromised situation highlighted Concentration Factor index where than half found at significant suggesting point should closely monitored combined analysis.

Water quality problems are a major challenge that humans encounter in the 21st Century. security presents pressing concern South Africa due to persistent difficulties ensuring water availability, accessibility, and quality. Given numerous activities taking place adjacent riverbanks, there has been decline This study determined state of Crocodile River’s intermediate assessed effects various human-induced activities. samples were collected during 2016–2023 different sites within River, physicochemical parameters analysed an accredited laboratory. The Python package Seaborn was used for statistical analysis data provide visualizations variations. Overall, results show elevated concentrations electrical conductivity (EC) sulphate (SO42−) recorded River. presence EC levels R571 Bridge exceeded 133.90 µs/cm between 2020 2021, whilst highest concentration (114 mg/L) SO42− Malelane year 2020. dry season (winter) wet (spring). comparisons spatiotemporal indicate fluctuate over time. Moreover, monitoring practice detecting change time is also fundamental providing valuable information necessary management integrated resources.
