Abstract This chapter provides an overview of different forms self-injurious behavior (SIB). A general distinction is made between direct and indirect SIB. Direct SIB a deliberate intentional harmful such as cutting or burning oneself while SIB, overeating substance abuse, in itself not immediately but increases the risk harm occurring subsequently. Indirect consists various behaviors, it does make sense to describe uniform phenomenon. The authors propose categorization non-suicidal review examples behaviors that belong each three categories proposed: (1) self-injury (active passive), (2) by proxy, (3) risk-taking behavior. Persons who use and/or do so because they achieve positive effect (benefit) here now (e.g., form emotion regulation) although can have negative consequences short long term. correlation found, this varies for types Barriers also vary are more often lower SIBs border on normal cultural tobacco alcohol use), than serious eating disorders. Further research needed relationship gain better understanding development trajectories mediators be able preventative therapeutic efforts.

Mental health problems among university students have been reported to be significantly increasing and suggested associated with college drop-out. Body dissatisfaction compulsive exercise are both constructs relevant for mental in general eating disorders particular. This study examined associations between body dissatisfaction, self-reported symptoms of depression Swedish students. Participants (n = 4262) an ongoing cohort study, data from the baseline assessment were used. Four linear regression models built explore weight control depressive symptoms. Our findings showed that females higher levels than males. this non-clinical population. Results was negatively depression, while positively depression. In line previous research, there a gender difference where displayed suggesting support research indicating increase problems. Compulsive behavior reinforced, supporting interest population III, study. http://clinicaltrials.gov/ID : NCT04465435.

Abstract Purpose Research has shown that self-compassion and body appreciation are associated with less disordered eating. However, previous literature mostly examined between-person associations, which do not account for fluctuations in these constructs within individuals over time. Understanding such could inform future tailored interventions to better address individuals’ needs by targeting times when they most vulnerable. The aim of this study was examine dynamic within-person associations between self-compassion, appreciation, eating young adults who self-reported trying lose weight. Methods Fifty-seven 18–30-year-old aiming weight reported their levels using items from the Short Form Self-Compassion Scale (SCS-SF), Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) eating, derived diary research, twice daily a 1-week period. Generalised Linear Mixed Modelling (GLMM) used three levels: observations (level 1), nested days 2), 3). Each GLMM included nominal random effects (participant, day, time day) controlled age, gender, Mass Index (BMI). Effect sizes, represented squared semi-partial correlation coefficients (sr2), were calculated each via multiple linear regression analyses represent unique amount variance explained predictor variable. Results findings showed after controlling BMI, negative found, while positive association found appreciation. Conclusions suggest further research should whether fostering may be putative targets reduce Level evidence III: Evidence obtained well-designed cohort or case control analytic studies.

Abstract Background “Cheat meals”, described as brief eating episodes that depart from established dietary practices to consume prohibited foods, represent a novel and increasingly common behavior with particular salience in adolescence young adulthood. However, knowledge gaps remain regarding the frequency characterization of foods calories consumed during cheat meals, their associations disorder behaviors psychopathology. Thus, aims this study were delineate engagement meals among large, national sample Canadian adolescents adults. Methods Participants (N = 2,717) Study Adolescent Health Behaviors. Frequencies associated consumed, past 12 months 30 days determined. The between psychopathology determined using modified Poisson regression analyses. Results Engagement was highest men (60.9%) compared women (53.7%) transgender/gender non-conforming (TGNC; 52.5%) participants. Cheat consisting 1,000 1,499 cal those most frequently reported all Mean number equivalent > 1 per week, which similar days. Finally, patterns participants, including binge-eating-related behaviors. Conclusions This further characterized extended meal across genders, aligning prior research by demonstrating is greater Plain english summary Findings add growing behavioral phenomenon meals. Specifically, over half adults 13 provinces territories Canada engaging dense months. Despite normalization promotion general public unique fitness communities, linked psychopathology, binge-eating episodes. Our findings emphasize need for research, awareness, clinical interventions aimed at addressing potentially harmful behavior.

Research suggests that both compulsive exercise and eating disordered behaviors increase during college. Despite strong cross-sectional associations between disorders, it is unknown if a variable risk factor for disorders or simply correlate. It was hypothesized increases in would significantly prospectively predict overall number of disorder symptoms over the study period.

This study aimed to describe the frequency of dieting practices among adolescents and young adults in Canada, as well determine association between eating disorder attitudes behaviors. Data from 2762 Canadian Study Adolescent Health Behaviors were analyzed. Frequencies used prevalence 11 different diets sample, chi-square tests assess gender differences. Multiple modified Poisson linear regression analyses conducted associations any Among 15.7 % girls women, 10.4 boys men, 13.0 transgender/gender expansive (TGE) participants reported past 12 months, with Ketogenic diet being most common all genders. Results showed that engaging months was associated greater psychopathology girls, boys, but not TGE participants. There varying trends specific types behaviors men. Dieting is relatively a national sample adults, engagement Healthcare public health professionals should consider screening for disorders who report practices.

Compulsive exercise (CE) is proposed to be a unique disorder within the feeding and eating spectrum, with potential cause range of physical mental health outcomes. However, it often remains undetected, highlighting need enhance screening for CE, especially outside (ED) treatment settings. Although CE commonly assessed using Exercise Test (CET), there are currently no established cutoff scores identifying in community settings or ED populations. This study utilized two samples—a general population sample recruited capture individuals elevated symptoms—to identify suitable CET. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were used, cases classified three ways. The area under curve was moderate high detecting optimal consistent across markers samples. present suggests that score 13.5, which increases sensitivity balances specificity, can used detect possible community. These results have practical implications diverse contribute further research understanding CE.
