A series of Pliocene ichnofabrics is described from the Cuevas Formation, Almería-Níjar Basin south-eastern Spain, where a thick, cross-stratified, mixed bioclastic-siliciclastic succession exposed along laterally continuous section. It records dynamic conditions ancient subaqueous dunes during their deposition and activities organisms colonizing them. The are dominated by Bichordites, traces likely made burrowing sea urchins adapted to live in shifting sand. Ichnofabrics range those showing weak bioturbation with little else but Bichordites (representing high-energy, continuously migrating dunes) featuring high degree containing low moderately diverse ichnofauna more physically stable environments could gather food less agitated waters). Strong burrowers like producers have acted as ecosystem engineers. Piscichnus may preyed on benthic sand-dune organisms. non-uniform distribution ichnotaxa these sand dunes, alongside previous studies, suggests that bioturbating communities been similar modern seas.

Most methods used for geoheritage inventories do not consider the quantitative assessment of geodiversity indicators; consequently, it can happen that some geosites are wrongly inventoried as sites and vice versa or activities scientific, educational, touristic purposes actually should be planned in unprovided with requirements. The main aim present paper is to raise awareness type sixteen localities Calabria–Peloritani Arc (Messina province; Italy) suitable scientific/educational/touristic assets. results research may synthesized follows: (i) identification several potential international significance; (ii) exclusion from any possible educational initiatives; (iii) possibility promote initiatives among a broader public sites, best addressed postgraduate geology students structural geology, tectonics, stratigraphy, and/or PhD young researchers; (iv) planning geo route devoted geoknowledge transfer on Alpine thrust tectonics Miocene block rotations involving arc-like structures such Paleozoic Meso-Cenozoic stratigraphy.

Sclerobiont communities from Messinian Clypeaster-rich beds at Terziza (Djebel Murdjadjo, NW Algeria) are described. Endobionts exclusively composed of domichnial structures polychaete annelids (Caulostrepsis isp. Maeandropolydora and Trypanites isp.), clionid sponges (Entobia geometrica, E. retiformis Entobia endolithic bivalves (Gastrochaenolites torpedo Gastrochaenolites isp.). Among sclerozoans, epibionts represented by barnacles, bryozoans, juvenile oysters, serpulids, vermetid gastropods (with attachment scar Santichnus mayorali). Host organisms include Ostrea lamellosa, Clypeaster, Pecten. The studied assemblage is ascribed to the ichnofacies, indicating nearshore, high-energy deposition influenced storm events, post-mortem bioerosion. mark initial Mediterranean marine transgression on southern flank Murdjadjo horst, characterised three distinct phases. bioerosion pattern parallels that Tafna basin, suggesting uniform environmental evolution during Early Messinian.

Sand colour can give important information about mineral composition and, consequently, sediment source areas and input systems. Beach appearance, which is mostly linked to sand colour, has a relevant economic function in tourist areas. In this paper, the of 66 samples, collected along both natural nourished beaches western Mediterranean coast Spain, were assessed CIEL*a*b* 1976 space. The obtained results showed differences between artificially beaches. many generally differs from native one because origin injected different. coordinates’ range is: L* (40.16–63.71); a* (−1.47–6.40); b* (7.48–18.06). On contrary, for beaches’ (47.66–70.75); a*(0.72‒5.16); (5.82–18.82). Impacts beach nourishment on studied at San Juan beach, most popular study area. Nourishment works performed after severe erosion, usually anthropic activities/structures storm events, but also increase width hence benefit tourism.

Many studies convincingly documented the diagnostic morphology of Scolicia, establishing a functional link with burrowing activities heart urchins, common components marine mobile faunas that emerged during Mesozoic Marine Revolution. However, this ichnotaxon has been repeatedly mentioned in both continental successions and Paleozoic strata, even though its characteristics were absent. This approach may reflect implicit belief behavioural convergence is rampant ichnologic record can be uncritically adopted almost all cases. We underscore importance definition Scolicia based on morphologic features supported by solid analysis from perspective function mode construction. view highlights value paleoenvironmental reconstructions significance to unravel macroevolutionary trends. Attribution an should involve understanding terms production rather than mere observation superficial similarities.

Abstract The Cenozoic genus Terebratula seems to be an exception the post-Permian trend in brachiopod retreat offshore habitats, because it was species rich and numerically abundant warm-temperate shallow-water environments Mediterranean Paratethys realms. This so despite general dominance of bivalves pervasive bioturbation predation pressure during Neogene. , however, went extinct Calabrian (Pleistocene). optimal environmental conditions for its prime are poorly known. Águilas Basin (SE Spain) is ideal study area investigate habitat shell beds this occur there cyclically early Pliocene deposits. We evaluate paleoecological boundary controlling distribution by estimating tolerances using benthic planktic foraminiferal nannoplanktic assemblages oxygen isotopes secondary layer calcite. Our results suggest that favored oligotrophic mesotrophic, well-oxygenated at water depths 60–90 m. Planktic point sea-surface temperatures between ~16°C 22°C, bottom-water 17°C 24°C. analyzed proxies indicate tolerated local variations depth, bottom temperature, oxygenation, productivity, organic enrichment. probably excluded grazing from well-lit preferentially occupied sediment-starved, current-swept upper habitats where coralline red algae were absent. Narrow temperature ranges might have been a disadvantage high-amplitude seawater fluctuations started about 1 Ma, when extinct.
