Food labeling is increasingly expanding and adding more information to the food package. There strong evidence about nutrition effectiveness in driving choice, especially if displayed front of package (FoP). Despite growing attention sustainable diets, few countries have implemented labels or eco-labels that could address economic, social and/or environmental concerns. Implementing new techniques eco-labeling emerges as a consumer-focused solution. However, consumers’ choices heterogeneous not univocal. Thus, this review aims summarize FoP choice provide reference framework initiatives relative labeling. This narrative addresses both potential benefits well main concerns arise from use eco-labels. Although seems series sustainability for producers consumers, implementation such policies should take into consideration trade-offs inter-sectorial coordination obtain bigger impacts, assuming policy itself cannot transform whole system. Eco-labeling be encouraged within set shaping systems.

Abstract Background Reducing the environmental impact of foods consumed is important for meeting climate goals. We aimed to conduct a randomised controlled trial test whether ecolabels reduce food selected in worksite cafeterias, alone or combination with increased availability more sustainable meal options. Methods Worksite cafeterias ( n = 96) were one three study groups, 54 included final analysis. One group was intended increase meat-free options, but no change implemented. Therefore, this treated as part control, creating two groups: (1) control (no ecolabels) 35), and (2) 19). Regression analysis assessed primary outcome total hot meals sold over 6-week period. Secondary analyses explored individual indicators that composed score (i.e., greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, eutrophication, water scarcity). The mean weekly scores options full 12-week period using hierarchical mixed effects models. Results There significant effect intervention on (mean difference between sites: -1.4%, 95%CI: -33.6%, + 30.8%). evidence an (-5.4%, -12.6%, 2.5%), nor any four (greenhouse emissions: -3.6%, -30.7%, 34.3%; loss: 2.0%, -25.8%, 40.2%; eutrophication: -2.4%, -29.3%, 34.7%; scarcity: -0.4%, -28.7%, 39.1%). Conclusions Ecolabels may not be effective tool shift consumer behaviour towards lower impact. Front-of-package labels indicating a product’s environmental footprint (i.e., eco-score labels) offer promise to shift consumers towards more sustainable food choices. This study aimed understand whether impacted consumers’ perceptions of sustainability and intentions purchase unsustainable foods. US parents (n = 1,013) completed an online experiment in which they were shown 8 products (4 4 unsustainable). Participants randomized control 503, barcode on product packaging) or label group 510, packaging). The was color-coded with grade A-F based the footprint, where “A” indicates relative “F” unsustainability. rated each their future likelihood purchase. For products, effect greater older adults, men, participants higher educational attainment, incomes. ecolabels those attainment. Eco-score have potential direct products. Future studies should investigate effectiveness behavioral outcomes.

Background/Objectives: The effectiveness of eco-labels in encouraging more sustainable food choices varies across studies. We investigate whether consumers’ characteristics may explain this heterogeneity the context carbon footprint labeling by studying moderating role sociodemographic factors (age, gender, ethnicity, occupation), socioeconomic status (education and subjective position), place residence (rural to urban), political ideology. Methods: manipulated proportion carbon-labeled products two incentive-compatible pre-registered choice experiments. first (n = 715) asked consumers shop for instant meal an online grocery store containing a category’s complete product assortment. second 1233) forced make tradeoffs between preferences emissions consecutive cut fruit products, one without another with labels. To capture potential lasting effects, we collected purchase intention data from same respondents several months after exposure both Results: Across studies, increasing label led liberals centrists choose lower-emission foods but had minimal or no impact on conservatives (although it never backfired). None other individual moderated effects controlling However, young age, low position, urban indirectly improved responsiveness predicting liberal observed persisted four not longer. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate critical ideology provide actionable insights improve targeting design sustainability interventions.

Meat consumption has been linked to adverse health consequences, worsening climate change, and the risk of pandemics. is however a popular food product dissuading people from consuming meat proven difficult. Outside realm consumption, previous research shown that pictorial warning labels are effective at curbing tobacco smoking reducing sugary drinks alcohol. The present extends this work hypothetical meal selection, using an online decision-making task test whether people's choices can be influenced by focused on health, climate, or pandemic risks associated with meat. Setting quotas for age gender approximate UK nationally representative sample, total n = 1001 adult consumers (aged 18+) were randomised into one four experimental groups: label, control (no label present). All reduced proportion meals selected significantly compared group, reductions ranging −7.4% −10%. There no statistically significant differences in selection between different types labels. We discuss implications future research, policy, practice.

Interventions that alter characteristics of the food environment have been found to reduce energy intake in adults. However, few studies examined effect Availability (reducing number higher options) and Position (altering order interventions on choices by younger populations. Hence, this study individual combined effects adolescents’ selection from restaurant menus. In online experiment, adolescents (13-17 years; N=434) were randomly assigned one four groups: (1) absent (control group) = 60% options, ordered content; (2) present, 40% (3) menu options lower energy; (4) present energy. The primary outcome was average selected per meal (starter, main, dessert). Findings showed both reduced selection, whether presented as or combined. Thus, reducing availability ordering low high energy, appear be effective strategies for overall meals. Further research is needed determine these findings translate real-life choices.
