A trial was performed to study the effects of a partially defatted Hermetia illucens (L. 1758) larvae meal (HIM) replace fish in diet an adult gilthead sea bream. The were fed for 120 days with diets containing HIM: 0% (CTRL), 25 (HI25), 50 (HI50), and 75% (HI75), corresponding inclusion levels 0, 9.2, 18.4, 27.6%. digestibility carried out evaluate apparent coefficients (ADC). Growth performance, morphometric biometric indexes, gill cortisol, status gut mucosa, enzymes’ (alkaline proteases, lipase, amylase) activity evaluated. Morphometric digestibility, enzymes not affected by diet. Conversely, 27.6% HI level worsened specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio. Histology showed no significant differences between CTRL HI25 groups. many HI50 HI75 fish, anatomo-functional changes observed. No statistical found among ADC dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, gross energy. results that HIM can be used as alternative source up 18.4% without impacting ADCs, enzymes.

Fish culture plays an important role in supplying high-quality proteins and omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Aquaculture has been the fastest growing sector agriculture. Fishmeal is component of commercial fish feeds, but ensuring a sustainable supply fishmeal question. A good source aquafeeds insects. For past 20 years, investigations have carried out on insect meals as alternative sources for fishmeal. Thus far, results replacing feeding aquaculture species promising. However, some challenging issues including costs scaling up production remains. In this review, we aim to summarize status applying eight formulated aquafeeds. We also discussed feeds with listed future research directions make green, profitable (GPS) aquaculture. It certain that near future, large-scale farming processing produce ingredient will positive impact sustainability profitability

Abstract The aims of this review are to describe the role ‘blue‐food production’ (animals, plants and algae harvested from freshwater marine environments) within a circular bioeconomy, discuss how such framework can help sustainability resilience aquaculture summarise key examples novel nutrient sources that emerging in field fed‐aquaculture species. Aquaculture now provides >50% global seafood supply, share is expected increase at least 60% next decade. an important tool for reducing resource consumption protein production increasing climate change other disruptions (i.e. pandemics, geo‐political instability). Importantly, blue foods also provide essential nutrition growing human population. Blue helping goal ‘zero hunger’ (United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 2) while dependency on finite natural resources but further refinement new solutions needed make industry more ‘circular’ sustainable, particularly with respect sourcing raw materials aquafeeds. This describes feed available or may be created bioeconomy framework, their ultimately, these contribute de‐risking establishing resilient chain.

The success of the aquafeed industry mainly depends on availability raw ingredients with high nutritional value, such as fishmeal (FM). However, increased demand for FM elevates its prices and leads to feed costs. Thus, there is an urgent need find suitable alternatives in fish diets achieve sustainability aquaculture. Currently, attention being paid possibility using insect meals substitutes because their relatively quality. TM one those insects that can be regarded a unique candidate value. are rich sources essential amino acids (methionine), lipids, fatty acids, which vary based developmental stage worms. Although have abundant amount chitin fiber source other anti-nutritional factors, numerous studies investigated efficacy partial or complete substitution by T. molitor diets. In this context, we reviewed current research findings achievable inclusion levels versus several finfish shellfish species. We discussed potential use substitute evaluated effects growth, biometric indices, body composition. Besides, hematological parameters, immunological responses, antioxidative efficacy, intestinal health status, sensory criteria fed molitor-based were also assessed.

Abstract The present work employed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to quantify the overall effects of various types insect meal on special growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) protein efficiency (PER) aquatic animals. A total 107 studies published from 1990 2021, targeting 23 freshwater 17 marine fish species, employing species as replacement for fishmeal, was compiled. Overall, significantly higher Hedges’ g value SGR lower FCR found in animals fed dietary larval defatted mealworm Tenebrio molitor pupal full‐fat silkworm Bombyx mori compared with fishmeal diet. majority meals had negative linear correlation performance, except fly Chrysomya megacephala , which positive relationship, prepupal black soldier Hermetia illucens quadratic relationship. Some meals, including G . bimaculatus adult grasshoppers Oxya fuscovittata Zonocerus variegatus Cirina butyrospermi supported adequate at plausible inclusion levels. At low 2.2%, insect‐derived chitin performance improved utilization species. In quest minimize aquafeeds, holds enormous potential but is not sole option; rather, integrating novel/conventional materials more strategic. study lays groundwork further multidisciplinary considerations effective use an alternative aquafeed goal long‐term sustainability.

Over the last few years, concept of Circular Economy (CE) has received a lot attention due to its potential contribution Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially by reconciling economic growth with protection environment through grow-make-use-restore approach. The use insects in circular production systems been good example this as can transform wide range organic waste and by-products into nutritious feedstuffs, which then go back cycle. This paper explores mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) reviewing their applicability several industries such pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food, etc. Despite high versatility insect substitute source nutrients other valuable components, there are still many legislative behavioural challenges that hinder adoption acceptance.

The search for new, alternative and sustainable feeding sources, including insects, has become an important challenge on the feed market. In 2017, European Union (EU) started to allow use of insect meals as feeds fish. addition, in 2021, EU also authorized meal pig poultry farming. Some sustainable substitutes FM come from insects. present manuscript provides insight into an experiment carried out on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) a 50% replacement different larvae insect meals: Hermetia illucens (HI), Tenebrio molitor (TM). TM showed better results growth, utilization more active digestive function, supported by intestinal histological changes. Liver histology intermediary metabolism did not show relevant changes between meals, while other parameters such antioxidant enzyme activities tissue damage indicators potential meals functional ingredients.

The investigation revealed that inclusion levels different plant- animal-derived, ranged 10 80 % 2 100 respectively, in partial or complete replacement meal, generated positive effects performance, fillet quality. results showed above certain level inclusion, each can negatively affect metabolic activities, other biological parameters.
