Aquaculture has been challenged to find alternative ingredients develop innovative feed formulations that foster a sustainable future growth. Given the most recent trends in fish formulation on use of protein sources decrease dependency fishmeal, it is fundamental evaluate implications this new paradigm for health and welfare. This work intends comprehensively review impacts novel dietary gut microbiota health, stress immune responses, disease resistance, antioxidant capacity. The research results indicate sources, such as terrestrial plant proteins, rendered animal by-products, insect meals, micro- macroalgae, single cell proteins (e.g., yeasts), may negatively impact thus affecting responses. Nevertheless, some insects algae have functional properties exert an immunostimulatory activity. Further effects beyond growth, clearly needed. information gathered here utmost importance, order diets guarantee production healthy with high quality standards optimised welfare conditions, contributing growth aquaculture industry.

Abstract Food security remains a pressing concern in the face of an increasing world population and environmental challenges. As climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity continue to impact agricultural productivity, traditional livestock farming faces limitations meeting growing global demand for meat dairy products. In this context, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have emerged as promising alternative sustainable food production. BSFL possess several advantages over conventional livestock, including their rapid growth, adaptability various organic waste substrates, low impact. Their bioconversion rate, ability transform into valuable products, final product optimization are key factors that enhance potential nutrient-rich protein source, fertilizer, biofuel. This review explores strategies rate improve end products derived from BSF treatment. It highlights benefits using other interventions underscores significance optimizing meet challenges sustainably. Despite prospects BSF-derived consumer acceptance regulatory hurdles remain critical aspects address realizing full market potential. The utilization source feed can contribute management, reduce pollution, issue environmentally responsible manner. However, there is need further research innovation ensure safety, quality, economic viability BSF-based both animal human consumption.

Abstract The present work employed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to quantify the overall effects of various types insect meal on special growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) protein efficiency (PER) aquatic animals. A total 107 studies published from 1990 2021, targeting 23 freshwater 17 marine fish species, employing species as replacement for fishmeal, was compiled. Overall, significantly higher Hedges’ g value SGR lower FCR found in animals fed dietary larval defatted mealworm Tenebrio molitor pupal full‐fat silkworm Bombyx mori compared with fishmeal diet. majority meals had negative linear correlation performance, except fly Chrysomya megacephala , which positive relationship, prepupal black soldier Hermetia illucens quadratic relationship. Some meals, including G . bimaculatus adult grasshoppers Oxya fuscovittata Zonocerus variegatus Cirina butyrospermi supported adequate at plausible inclusion levels. At low 2.2%, insect‐derived chitin performance improved utilization species. In quest minimize aquafeeds, holds enormous potential but is not sole option; rather, integrating novel/conventional materials more strategic. study lays groundwork further multidisciplinary considerations effective use an alternative aquafeed goal long‐term sustainability.

Aquaculture is a significant industry in food production, and its contribution to nutrition security well acknowledged. Zambia’s aquaculture production has continued increase significantly, thus playing key role supplying animal protein sources for human consumption. However, recent estimates show that 75% of the national comes from large-scale commercial producers despite being by far minority while majority small-scale contribute remaining 25% total annual production. This low attributed insufficient financial resources, poor management utilization farm lack access competitive markets, more recently changing climate. In this research, we examine viability integrated agriculture-aquaculture (IAA) as means Zambia boost their output numerous obstacles they face. addition, could prevent farmers adopting IAA have been emphasized. We conclude potential dramatically Zambia, but information understanding must be improved make it feasible alternative.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing agricultural industry in world. Fishmeal an essential component of commercial fish diets, but its long-term sustainability a concern. Therefore, it important to find alternatives fishmeal that have similar nutritional value and, at same time, are affordable and readily available. The search for high-quality oil has interested researchers worldwide. Over past 20 years, different insect meals been studied as potential alternate source aquafeeds. On other hand, probiotics-live microbial strains-are being used dietary supplements showing beneficial effects on growth health status. Fish gut microbiota plays significant role nutrition metabolism, which affects number physiological functions, including development, immune regulation, pathogen resistance. One key reasons studying possibility modify communities inhabit intestine benefit host health. development DNA sequencing technologies advanced bioinformatics tools made metagenomic analysis feasible method researching microbes. In this review, we analyze summarize current knowledge provided by studies our research group using meal probiotic aquafeed formulations their microbiota. We also highlight future directions make proteins sustainable aquaculture explore challenges associated with use probiotics. Insect probiotics will undoubtedly positive effect profitability aquaculture.

A 12‐week growth trial was conducted to assess the effects of mealworm meals, as a substitution for fishmeal, on growth, physiobiochemical responses, digesta microbiome, and immune‐related genes expression Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ). Twenty parr (38.5 ± 0.1 g, initial weight) were stocked into each 16 tanks in recirculating aquaculture system. fishmeal‐based diet (100% FM) used control treatment compared with three test diets where: (1) fishmeal partially (50%) replaced defatted meal, Tenebrio molitor (50% DMM), (2) fully meal (3) whole lesser Alphitobius diaperinus WMM). All substitutions done crude protein basis. Each four experimental evaluated quadruplicate part randomized design. The results indicated that showed high survival (greater or equal 98.8%), no significant difference final feed efficiency, feces stability condition indices. Hepatosomatic index lower fish fed 100% DMM 50% WMM when FM). Whole‐body proximate amino acid compositions not statistically different between treatments, while essential fatty acids, including linolenic, eicosapentaenoic acid, homo‐a‐linolenic, DMM. Plasma parameters (total protein, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total iron‐binding capacity), hepatic peroxide, antioxidant enzymes significantly affected by dietary substitutions, whereas plasma immunoglobulin M higher levels inclusion meals impacted overall microbiome composition but richness evenness microbiomes control. most common genus all treatments Pseudomonas , which has been previously shown have both commensal pathogenic members. relative expressions (IGF‐I) synthesis (TIPRL) (IgM, IgD, IgT) upregulated diet.
