Cancer is the world's second most common cause of death, with colon cancer (CC) ranking third in prevalence and cancer-related fatalities. CC originates or rectum influenced by genetic mutations, lifestyle, diet. Although chemotherapy, especially 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), fundamental to treatment has improved patient survival, its benefits are often limited significant side effects emerging drug resistance. Recently, plant-based foods have drawn interest research for their natural bioactive compounds relatively low toxicity. Certain plant not only exhibit anti-cancer activity but may also boost effectiveness 5-FU while reducing adverse effects. Despite evidence suggesting a synergistic effect between 5-FU, this area remains fragmented. This review consolidates current on including fruits, vegetables, legumes, tea bioactives treatment. Besides, it explores mechanisms through which these enhance efficacy reduce effects, evaluates clinical application prospects, identifies challenges future directions. comprehensive analysis aims provide scientific foundation integrated CC, highlighting potential enhancing chemotherapy associated toxicities.

Pomegranates are rich in phenolic compounds and known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer properties. The highest concentration of these is found the peel (exocarp mesocarp), which constitutes about 50% whole fresh fruit. These bioactive phytochemicals exhibit a broad spectrum antimicrobial effects against both Gram-negative Gram-positive bacteria, as well fungi. In present paper, chemical composition activity mesocarp) from seven Punica granatum varieties (Wonderful, Mollar de Elche, Primosole, Sassari 1, 2, 3, Arbara Druci) grown Sardinia (Italy) were evaluated. Polar phenols, flavonoids, condensed tannins, anthocyanin contents evaluated by extraction with water at 20 40 °C. Orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was used characterize each variety according pomegranate extracts (PPEs). antibiofilm activities PPE further tested vitro Staphyloccocus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella bongori, Escherichia coli, Lacticaseibacillus casei Limosilactobacillus reuteri. species more sensitive than tested. Antimicrobial shown S. aureus L. monocytogenes strains, whereas less, even no bongori E. coli strains. PPEs 3 showed concentrations that varied 0.19 1.50 mg/mL, biofilm being reduced 70%. positively related punicalagin, flavonoid, chlorogenic acid content extracts. Finally, regarding pro-technological bacterial La. Li. reuteri very low, sensitivity specific high concentrations. This study proposes formulation extract valorizes agro-industrial waste context sustainability circular economy. Pomegranate should be considered potential sources natural, plant-derived antimicrobials, providing an alternative artificial products.

Cardiac fibrosis is a pathological process characterized by an excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) and increased production fibrillar collagen in the cardiac interstitium, mainly caused activation fibroblasts their transition into myofibroblasts. Oxidative stress deeply implicated pathogenesis both directly via its involvement tumor growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) signaling. Ellagic acid (EA) punicic (PA) are main components Punica granatum L (pomegranate) fruit seed oil respectively, whose antioxidant, anti-inflammatory anti-fibrotic effects have been previously described. Therefore, aim this study was to investigate EA or PA EA+PA vitro model fibrosis. Immortalized Human Fibroblasts (IM-HCF) were stimulated with 10 ng/ml TGF-β1 for 24 h induce fibrotic damage. Cells then treated (1 µM), µM) additional h. Both reduced pro-fibrotic proteins expressions intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. The anti-oxidant activity also observed Nrf2 consequent TGF-β1-Smad2/3-MMP2/9 Wnt/β-catenin signaling inhibition, thus reducing production. significantly inhibit NF-κB pathway and, consequently, TNF-α, IL-1β IL-6 levels: greater effect when used combination. These results suggest that EA, particular might be effective through antioxidant properties modulation different molecular pathways.

The healthy properties of pomegranate fruit, a highly consumed food, have been known for long time. However, the supply chain is still rather inefficient, with non-edible fraction, whose weight roughly half total and endowed plenty valuable bioactive compounds, either disposed or underutilized. A novel extract obtained from byproducts (called PPE), using hydrodynamic cavitation, green, efficient, scalable technique, was investigated its cardiovascular effects in vivo. PPE showed efficacy an acute phenylephrine (PE)-induced hypertensive rat model, similar to whole fruit (PFE) same extractive along good intestinal bioaccessibility after oral administration. Finally, when chronically administered 6 weeks spontaneously rats, shown significantly contain increase systolic blood pressure, comparable reference drug Captopril, at dose remarkably lower than reported effective ellagic acid. fraction also anti-inflammation anti-fibrotic effects. findings this study, extraction could contribute enhancing value chain, relieve related environmental burden, potentially improve public health.
