Microbial exposures and sex hormones exert potent effects on autoimmune diseases, many of which are more prevalent in women. We demonstrate that early-life microbial determine hormone levels modify progression to autoimmunity the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse model type 1 diabetes (T1D). Colonization by commensal microbes elevated serum testosterone protected NOD males from T1D. Transfer gut microbiota adult immature females altered recipient's microbiota, resulting metabolomic changes, reduced islet inflammation autoantibody production, robust T1D protection. These were dependent androgen receptor activity. Thus, community alters regulates disease fate individuals with high genetic risk.

The widespread application of next-generation sequencing technologies has revolutionized microbiome research by enabling high-throughput profiling the genetic contents microbial communities. How to analyze resulting large complex datasets remains a key challenge in current studies. Over past decade, powerful computational pipelines and robust protocols have been established enable efficient raw data processing annotation. focus shifted toward downstream statistical analysis functional interpretation. Abstract The role of microbiota in health and diseases is being highlighted by numerous studies since its discovery. Depending on the localized regions, can be classified into gut, oral, respiratory, skin microbiota. microbial communities are symbiosis with host, contributing to homeostasis regulating immune function. However, dysbiosis lead dysregulation bodily functions including cardiovascular (CVDs), cancers, respiratory diseases, etc. In this review, we discuss current knowledge how links host or pathogenesis. We first summarize research healthy conditions, gut-brain axis, colonization resistance modulation. Then, highlight pathogenesis disease development progression, primarily associated community composition, modulation response, induction chronic inflammation. Finally, introduce clinical approaches that utilize for treatment, such as fecal transplantation.
