With the modernization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), requirement for quality control has increased. The marker (Q-marker) is an important standard in this field been implemented with remarkable success recent years. However, establishment Q-markers remains fragmented process lacks systematicity, resulting inconsistent insufficient correlation clinical efficacy safety TCM. This review introduces four multimodal integrated approaches that contribute to discovery more comprehensive accurate Q-markers, thus aiding new patterns based on characteristics principles These include whole-process strategy, chemical-activity-based screening method, efficacy, safety, consistent combination TCM theory-guided approach. Furthermore, methodologies representative examples these strategies are described, future directions questions also proposed.

The rhizome of Atractylodes lancea (RAL) is a well-known Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) that has been applied in clinical settings for thousands years. In the past two decades, cultivated RAL gradually replaced wild and become mainstream practice. quality CHM significantly influenced by its geographical origin. To date, limited studies have compared composition from different origins. As essential oil primary active component RAL, strategy combining gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) chemical pattern recognition was first to compare (RALO) regions China. Total ion chromatography (TIC) revealed RALO origins had similar composition; however, relative content main compounds varied significantly. addition, 26 samples obtained various were divided into three categories hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) principal (PCA). Combined with location analysis, producing classified areas. vary depending on production Furthermore, one-way variance (ANOVA) there significant differences six compounds, including modephene, caryophyllene, γ-elemene, atractylon, hinesol, atractylodin, between Hinesol, β-eudesmol selected as potential markers distinguishing areas orthogonal partial least squares discriminant (OPLS-DA). conclusion, GC-MS this research identified variations across developed an effective method geographic origin tracking based oils.

Both the bulbs and flowers of Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. (BFT FFT) are widely applied as expectorants antitussives in traditional Chinese medicine, but few studies have been conducted to compare chemical compositions these plant parts. In this study, 50% methanol extracts BFT FFT were analyzed via UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS/MS, feasibility using non-targeted UHPLC-HRMS metabolomics molecular networking address authentication bulb flower samples was evaluated. Principal component analysis (PCA), Orthogonal Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), heat map showed there dissimilar metabolites FFT. As a result, 252 107 peaks positive ion mode negative mode, respectively, considered represent significant difference variables between Then, MS/MS-based constructed perform an in-depth characterization different variables. A total 31 alkaloids with differences annotated paper, including seven cis-D/E-vevanine without C20-OH one trans-D/E-cevanine C20-OH, thirteen five cevanine N-oxide, veratramine. Among alkaloids, eight had higher than contents, while all flavonoids identified our work greater contents. The influence ingredients on pharmacological activities should be investigated future studies.
