Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) play an important role in insect peripheral olfactory systems and exploring the physiological function of OBPs could facilitate understanding insects' chemical communication. Here, functional analysis antenna-based NlugOBP8 from brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) was performed both vitro vivo. Recombinant exhibited strong affinity to 13 out 26 rice plant volatiles form a stable complex with 9 them according fluorescence quenching experiments. Circular dichroism spectra demonstrated that six give rise significant conformational change recombinant NlugOBP8. H-tube olfactometer bioassay confirmed BPHs were significantly attracted by nerolidol repelled linalool, caryophyllene oxide, terpinolene, respectively. Antennae dsNlugOBP8-injected lower electrophysiological response linalool oxide. Moreover, repellent responses these two also impaired upon silencing These data suggest is involved recognizing oxide provide additional target for sustainable control BPHs.

Abstract Olfactometers have been used for more than 100 years and are integral to experimental chemical ecology. Studies utilising olfactometer bioassays form the foundation understanding behavioural responses of invertebrates stimuli under standardised laboratory conditions. Widely olfactometry apparatuses include two‐arm olfactometers binary through four‐ six‐arm arenas evaluate complex behaviours. Despite its prevalence in ecology studies, there has never a review best practice olfactometry. This critically evaluates both methods applications as well design analysis. Abstract Gut bacteria play important roles in insect life cycle, and various routes can be used by insects to effectively transmit their gut bacteria. However, it is unclear if the spread actively attracting hosts, recognition mechanisms of host are poorly understood. Here, we explore chemical interactions between Bactrocera dorsalis its bacterium Citrobacter sp. (CF-BD). We found that CF-BD could affect development ovaries vertically transmitted via oviposition. attract B. lay eggs producing 3-hexenyl acetate (3-HA) fruits were hosts . Furthermore, directly recognize with ovipositors which olfactory genes expressed bind 3-HA. This work reports an mechanism concerning active insects.

The physiological state of an insect can affect its olfactory system. However, the molecular mechanism underlying effect nutrition-dependent states on odour-guided behaviours in hoverflies remains unclear. In this study, comparative transcriptome analysis antenna and proboscis from Eupeodes corollae under different feeding was conducted. Compared with previously published antennal transcriptome, a total 32 novel chemosensory genes were identified, including 4 ionotropic receptors, 17 gustatory 9 odorant binding proteins 2 proteins. Analysis differences gene expression between male female antennae proboscises revealed that levels impacted by state. For instance, EcorOBP19 antennae, EcorOBP6 proboscis, EcorOR6 , EcorOR14 EcorIR5 EcorIR84a significantly upregulated after feeding. On other hand, EcorCSP7 EcorOR40 downregulated. These findings suggest nutritional plays role adaptation hoverflies' system to food availability. Overall, our study provides important insights into plasticity systems hoverflies.

Insects have highly developed olfactory systems in which cytochrome P450s (CYPs) were involved as odor-degrading enzymes throughout the recognition of odor compounds by insects to avoid continuous stimulation signaling molecules and thus damage nervous. To understand whether expressed CYPs antennae play an function Solenopsis invicta worker, this study, we find six antennal from transcriptome S. invicta. The expression patterns these analyzed RT-qPCR, revealed that SinvCYP6K1 SinvCYP4V2 only adult workers. workers was markedly diminished after feeding with dsRNA. electroantennography (EAG) assay demonstrated silencing either or resulted a notable reduction EAG response 2-ethyl-3,6(5)-dimethylpyrazine (EDMP).
