To address challenges associated with climate resilience, health and well-being in urban areas, current policy platforms are shifting their focus from ecosystem-based to nature-based solutions (NBS), broadly defined as societal that inspired supported by nature. NBS result the provision of co-benefits, such improvement place attractiveness, quality life, creation green jobs. Few frameworks exist for acknowledging assessing value co-benefits guide cross-sectoral project design implementation. In this paper, we firstly developed a holistic framework (and costs) across elements socio-cultural socio-economic systems, biodiversity, ecosystems climate. The was guided review over 1700 documents science practice within 10 relevant cities globally. We found can have environmental, social economic and/or costs both these challenges. On base, develop propose seven-stage process situating co-benefit assessment seven stages include: 1) identify problem or opportunity; 2) select assess related actions; 3) implementation processes; 4) implement NBS; 5) frequently engage stakeholders communicate co-benefits; 6) transfer upscale 7) monitor evaluate all stages. conclude together represent valuable tool guiding thinking identifying multiple values

Ecosystem service concepts can offer a valuable approach for linking human and nature, arguments the conservation restoration of natural ecosystems. Despite an increasing interest in topic, application these water resource management has been hampered by lack practical definitions methodologies. In this study we review analyse current literature propose assessing valuing ecosystem services context management. particular, to link between multiple pressures, ecological status delivery aquatic ecosystems under different scenarios measures or future changes. This is development River Basin Management Plans EU Water Framework Directive. Ecosystem services research faces several challenges stemming from the plurality of interpretations classifications and terminologies. In this paper we identify two main with current ecosystem classification systems: i) inconsistency across concepts, terminology definitions, and; ii) mix up processes end-state benefits, or flows assets. Although different service definitions can be valuable for enriching landscape, it is necessary to address existing ambiguity improve comparability among ecosystem-service-based approaches. Using cascade framework as a reference, Systems Ecology theoretical underpinning, aim typologies. We present refreshed conceptualization support assessment techniques measurement. combine notions biomass, information interaction system ecology, clarify terminology. argue that should defined interactions (i.e. processes) produce change in well-being, while components goods, i.e. countable biomass units, are only proxies such changes. Furthermore, re-interpretation related applied research, where more emphasis needed on underpinning complexity system.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a pioneering piece of legislation that aims to protect and enhance aquatic ecosystems promote sustainable water use across Europe. There growing concern the objective good status, or higher, in all EU waters by 2027 long way from being achieved many countries. Through questionnaire analysis almost 100 experts, we provide recommendations WFD monitoring assessment systems, improve programmes measures further integrate with other sectoral policies. Our highlights there great potential schemes through strategic design networks innovation, such as earth observation. New diagnostic tools existing data, but incorporate novel statistical trait-based approaches could be used more widely diagnose cause deterioration under conditions multiple pressures deliver hierarchy solutions for evidence-driven decisions river basin management. also recognition undertaken management should benefits sectors, reduced flood risk, needs robust demonstration studies evaluate these. Continued efforts 'mainstreaming' policy into sectors clearly needed wider success goals, particularly agricultural policy. Other key areas where need stronger integration was recognised included urban planning (waste treatment), flooding, climate energy (hydropower). Having deadline attaining status important, even essential have permanent framework addresses delays implementation measures. This requires long-term perspective, far beyond current 2027.

Abstract Fluvial riparian vegetation (RV) links fluvial and terrestrial ecosystems. It is under significant pressure from anthropogenic activities, and, therefore, the management restoration of RV are increasingly important worldwide. has been investigated different perspectives, so knowledge on its structure function widely distributed. We quantify main ecosystem services (i.e. the contribution of ecosystems to human well-being) provided by rivers, lakes, coastal waters and connected (riparian areas floodplains) in Europe, including water provisioning, purification, erosion prevention, flood protection, recreation. show European maps service capacity, flow (actual use), sustainability efficiency. Then we explore relationship between condition at scale, considering ecological status aquatic ecosystems, reported under EU Water Framework Directive, as a measure integrity biodiversity. Our results indicate that higher delivery regulating cultural analysed is mostly correlated with better conditions ecosystems. Conversely, use provisioning can result pressures on ecosystem. This suggests importance maintaining good ensure future. These continental although limited analysis, might be relevant consider when investing protection restoration called for current policy Biodiversity Strategy United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
