A steep rise in global plastic production and significant discharge of waste are expected the near future. Plastics pose a threat to ecosystem human health through generation particulate plastics that act as carriers for other emerging contaminants, release toxic chemical additives. Since additives not covalently bound, they can freely leach into environment. Due their occurrence various environmental settings, exert ecotoxicity. However, only 25% have been characterized potential ecological concern. Despite market statistics highlighting substantial burden caused by unrestricted use additives, information on ecotoxicity remains incomplete. By focusing impacts present review aims provide detailed insights following aspects: (i) diversity environment, (ii) leaching from materials, (iii) trophic transfer, (iv) exposure, (v) risks health, (vi) legal guidelines mitigation strategies. These immense value restricting searching eco-friendly alternatives, establishing or revising agencies.

Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are compounds widely used as raw materials in the production of plastics, making them ubiquitous our daily lives. This results widespread human exposure health hazards. Although efforts have been conducted to evaluate risk these diverse regions around world, data scattering may mask important trends that could be useful for updating current guidelines regulations. study offers a comprehensive global assessment levels chemicals, considering dietary nondietary ingestion, evaluates associated risk. Overall, intake (EDI) values phthalates BPA reported worldwide ranged from 1.11 × 10−7 3 700 µg kg bw−1 d−1 3.00 10−5 6.56 d−1, respectively. Nevertheless, dose-additive effect has shown increase EDI up 5 100 representing high terms noncarcinogenic (HQ) carcinogenic (CR) effects. The HQ 2.25 3.66 2.74 9.72 10−2, Meanwhile, significant number studies exhibit CR benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) di(2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP). Moreover, DEHP highest maximum mean humans numerous studies, 179-fold higher than BBP. Despite mounting evidence harmful effects chemicals at low-dose on animals humans, most regulations not updated. Thus, this article emphasizes need public policies compelling adverse exposure, it cautions against use alternative plasticizers substitutes because gaps their safety.

Aromatic amine antioxidants (AAs), extensively used in rubber products, and their ozone-photolyzed product p-phenylenediamine quinones (PPD-Qs) were found to be pervasive various environments with potential ecological health risks. The relationship between external internal exposure these contaminants risks the general population remain poorly explored. Herein, dust–handwipe–urine samples (n = 97 pairs) from families Tianjin, China was collected for analyzing 20 AAs 6 PPD-Qs (including self-synthesized emerging PPD-Qs). median concentration of ∑20AAs (1310 ng/g, 354 ng/m2, 18.5 ng/mL, respectively) ∑6PPD-Qs (1645 3913 ng/m2 3.76 dust, handwipe, urine indicated a non-negligible contamination indoor environment. Notably, DPPD-Q DNPD-Q (oxidation products DPPD DNPD, prominent, accounting >90% PPD-Qs. correlation analysis estimated daily intake (EDI) assessments that neither dust ingestion nor dermal may primary source population, other pathways (e.g., diet inhalation) exist. In vitro HepG2 cell experiments demonstrated both PPDs have risk hepatotoxicity.

Along with the restrictions of phthalate esters (PAEs), a variety nonphthalate plasticizers (NPPs) have been increasingly used for industrial needs. Knowledge remains limited on environmental occurrences, fate, and human exposure risks many emerging NPPs. In this study, we investigated suite 45 NPPs along major PAEs in house dust from five regions Asia-Pacific region United States. The findings clearly demonstrated ubiquitous occurrences home environment, particularly acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), tricapryl trimellitate (TCTM), trioctyl (TOTM), glycerol monooleate (GMO), methyl oleate (MO), diisobutyl adipate (DiBA). median total concentrations ranged 17.8 to 252 μg/g study regions, while mean ratios ΣNPPs ΣPAEs 0.19 (Hanoi) 0.72 (Adelaide). Spatial differences were observed not only chemical abundances but also composition profiles hazard quotient (HQ) prioritization individual chemicals. Although current may unlikely cause significant health according HQ estimation, potential cannot be overlooked, due lack appropriate toxic threshold data, existence additional pathways, possible cocktail effects coexisting PAEs.

Over the last decades, global concerns regarding possible adverse health effects of chemical pollutants on hormonal systems living organisms in wildlife and humans are constantly growing. Endocrine-active endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) belong to a heterogeneous class exogenous chemicals, including various persistent anthropogenic contaminants, pesticides, distinct substances used consumer products, also natural compounds. Exposure through food chain is considered essential for most EDC, while they may enter as residues from animal- or plant-based production (e.g. pesticides pharmaceutical residues), be released contact materials, present due contamination mycoestrogens), via polluted environment plant ingredients phytoestrogens). The complexity subject to: a) ubiquitous occurrence hardly avoidance many with supposed endocrine properties, b) scientific disagreement among experts huge number partly controversial study outcomes c) increasing pressure public, necessitating higher level transparency clear-cut orientation respect reduction strategies. In this light, current review intends provide an overview historical regulatory developments topic discusses important difference between endocrine-active disruptive presents some key characteristics acting better understanding their relevance long-term effects, windows sensitivity, low-dose “cocktail” effects. addition, comprehensive different exposure paths given, both focus naturally occurring contaminations external sources.
