Plastics are commonly used for packaging in the food industry. The most popular thermoplastic materials that have found such applications polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and polystyrene (PS). Microplastics (MPs) as emerging contaminants have become a major global concern, however, the distribution and origin of MPs in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) their impacts on ecosystem are poorly known. Hence, we systematically evaluated profile representative metropolitan locations Lhasa Huangshui Rivers scenic sites Namco Qinghai Lake. The average abundance water samples was 7020 items/m3, which 34 52 times higher than those for sediment (206.7 items/m3) soil (134.7 items/m3), respectively. River had highest levels, followed by Lake, Namco. Human activities rather altitude salinity impacted areas. Besides consumption plastic products locals tourists, laundry wastewater exogenous tributary inputs, unique prayer flag culture also contributed to emission QTP. Notably, stability fragment were crucial fate. Multiple assessment models employed evaluate risk MPs.
