Low-grade neural and peripheral inflammation are among the proposed pathophysiological mechanisms of schizophrenia. White matter impairment is one more consistent findings in schizophrenia but underlying mechanism remains obscure. Many cerebral white components sensitive to neuroinflammatory conditions that can result demyelination, altered oligodendrocyte differentiation, other changes. We tested hypothesis immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) compensatory immune-regulatory reflex (IRS/CIRS) dynamics associated with reduced integrity patients

Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) is associated with great disability, functional impairment, and substantial socioeconomic costs. While clozapine indicated in patients TRS, its use restricted to who have not responded at least 2 other antipsychotics, thus implying a series of empirical trials different drugs before receiving effective treatment. In this scenario, the identification reliable biological markers predict risk for TRS starting pharmacological treatments might significantly improve management early stages. We conducted systematic review on PubMed, Scopus Web Science identify studies investigating peripheral TRS. A total 75 articles were included. These mostly investigated association between genetic (n = 42, which 16 genome-wide 25 candidate-gene design) protein/metabolite 23), while only minority RNA 5), methylation levels 4), gut microbiota profiles 1), or more than one type marker 3). The elucidation biomarkers challenging due large heterogeneity across terms clinical definition relatively small sample size many studies, as well lack powered integrating data multi-omic level. Nonetheless, available suggest be trait significant heritability point inflammation cytokine imbalance most promising pathways involved complex phenotype.

Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) may be considered as a neuro-immune disorder. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains an important therapeutic option for patients with TRS, however, its impact on cytokine profile is barely investigated. Therefore, this study attempts to establish associations between serum cytokines IL-6, IL-12, IL-5, IL-10 and TGF-β1 changes (pre- post-ECT) the effectiveness of ECT in TRS patients. The second aim search correlations concentrations above specified psychometric assessments clinical symptoms.

Previous studies have suggested that choroid plexus (ChP) enlargement occurs in individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD) and is associated peripheral inflammation. However, it unclear whether such an delineates a biologically defined subgroup of SSD. Moreover, remains elusive how ChP linked to brain regions inflammation A cross-sectional cohort 132 SSD 107 age-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clinical phenotyping investigate the regions. case-control comparison volumes was conducted, structural variance analyzed by employing variability ratio (VR). K-means clustering analysis used identify subgroups distinct patterns ventricular system, clusters were compared terms demographic, clinical, immunological measures. The relationship between regions, previously inflammation, investigated. We did not find significant HC but detected increased VR lateral ventricle volumes. Based on these we identified 3 differences cognitive measures possibly inflammatory markers. Larger volume higher hippocampus, putamen, thalamus HC. This study suggests variability, mean volume, SSD,
