Abstract Previous research has relied on characteristics of relationship behaviours (e.g., choosing/avoiding intimacy) as evidence prioritising potential rewards over the perceived risks (i.e., interpersonal risk tolerance). Across four studies ( N total = 1422), we drew from psychological risk–reward models decision‐making to test whether risks, benefits, and/or tolerance were associated with goals and behaviours. Self‐esteem was positively expecting greater benefits perceiving less in but not differences perceived; Studies 1 & 2). Furthermore, expected connection engaging those behaviours, whereas self‐protection engagement (Studies 3 4). Our findings suggest that people high self‐esteem are necessarily tolerant instead differ their perceptions consequently engage they expect confer avoid ones anticipate will be costly.

The Ecological Model Resilience (EMR) may explain why individuals are not resilient whilst others are. In this study we test EMR in a comparison UK survey data collected from Psychological Research Consortium (C19PRC) longitudinal representative sample United Kingdom (UK) adult population and an Italian arm study. We first compare third wave study, July/August 2020, with equivalent stage Italy July 2020. Next, using C19PRC Waves 1, 3 5, between March 2020 April 2021 identify proportion people who were resilient. Finally, examine which factors, drawn EMR, predict non-resilient outcomes. find 72% was resilient, line cross-sectional logistic regression model, age self-esteem significantly associated resilience death anxiety thoughts , neuroticism loneliness Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to Non-Resilient analysis, at Wave 80% Resilient. Service use belonging wider neighbourhood self-rated health openness externally generated Resilient contrast, PTSD effectively explained results.
