Loss of a loved one is painful event that substantially elevates the risk for physical and mental illness impaired daily function. Socially monogamous prairie voles are laboratory-amenable rodents form life-long pair bonds exhibit distress upon partner separation, mirroring phenotypes seen in humans. These attributes make an excellent model studying biology loss. In this review, we highlight parallels between humans voles, focusing on reward system engagement during bonding As yearning unique feature differentiates loss from other negative states, posit which homeostatic mechanisms help to maintain disrupted loss, resulting impacts. Finally, synthesize studies delineate remodeling systems adaptation. The stalling these processes likely contributes prolonged grief disorder, diagnosis recently added Diagnostic Statistical Manual Psychiatry.

The quality of romantic relationships can predict health consequences related to aging. DNA methylation-based biomarkers aging accurately estimate chronological age. We developed several highly accurate epigenetic clocks, based on conserved mammalian CpGs, for the socially monogamous prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In addition, our dual-species human-vole clock measured relative age and illustrates high species conservation effects. Next, we assessed how pair bonding impacts did not find evidence that pair-bonded voles exhibit accelerated or decelerated effects in blood, ear, liver, brain tissue. Our epigenome wide association study identified CpGs five genes strongly associated with bonding: Foxp4, Phf2, Mms22l, Foxb1, Eif1ad. Overall, present estimators a great interest researchers studying monogamy animals. any sex-naive animals differently from

The neuropeptide hormone oxytocin is involved in many processes our bodies, linking social lives to internal states. I started out my career studying primate families, an interest that expanded into the role of family-oriented behaviors such as pair bonding and parenting prairie voles, humans, other primates. Starting a post-doc with Dr. C. Sue Carter, also became interested during development way we manipulate clinically. During then faculty member at University California, Davis, have worked on number these questions.
