Although biofeedback using electrophysiology has been explored extensively, the approach of neurofeedback corresponding to hemodynamic response is a relatively young field. Real time functional magnetic resonance imaging-based (rt-fMRI-NF) uses sensory feedback operantly reinforce patterns neural response. It can be used, for example, alter visual perception, increase brain connectivity, and reduce depression symptoms. Within recent years, interest in rt-fMRI-NF both research clinical contexts expanded considerably. As such, building consensus regarding best practices great value.

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback is an increasingly popular neuroimaging technique that allows individual to gain control over his/her own brain signals, which can lead improvements in behavior healthy participants as well of clinical symptoms patient populations. However, a considerably large ratio undergoing training do not learn their signals and, consequently, benefit from interventions, limits efficacy interventions. As success varies between studies and participants, it important identify factors might influence success. Here, for the first time, we employed big data machine learning approach investigate 20 different design-specific (e.g. activity vs. connectivity feedback), region interest-specific cortical subcortical) subject-specific age) on performance improvement 608 28 independent experiments. With classification accuracy 60% (considerably chance level), identified two significantly influenced performance: Both inclusion pre-training no-feedback run before patients compared were associated with better performance. The positive effect runs be due familiarization setup mental imagery task runs. Better driven by higher motivation patients, ranges regulation dysfunctional or more extensive piloting experimental paradigms. Due heterogeneity our dataset, these findings likely generalize across studies, thus providing guidance designing efficient specifically improving neurofeedback-based To facilitate development data-driven recommendations specific design details subpopulations field would stronger engagement open science research practices sharing.

While still relatively rare, longitudinal hyperscanning studies are exceptionally valuable for documenting changes in inter-brain synchrony, which may turn underpin how behaviors develop and evolve social settings. The generalizability ecological validity of this experimental approach hinges on the selected imaging technique being mobile–a requirement met by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). fNIRS has most frequently been used to examine development synchrony behavior child-parent dyads. In position paper, we contend that dedicating attention intergenerational stands benefit fields cognitive neuroscience more broadly. We argue is particularly relevant understanding neural mechanisms underpinning dynamics, potentially benchmarking progress psychological interventions, many situated contexts. line with our position, highlight areas research stand be enhanced mobile devices, describe challenges arise from measuring across generations real world, offer potential solutions.

Neurofeedback training using real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rtfMRI-NF) allows subjects voluntary control of localised and distributed brain activity. It has sparked increased interest as a promising non-invasive treatment option in neuropsychiatric neurocognitive disorders, although its efficacy clinical significance are yet to be determined. In this work, we present the first extensive review acquisition, processing quality methods available improve neurofeedback signal. Furthermore, investigate state denoising practices 128 recently published rtfMRI-NF studies. We found: (a) that less than third studies reported implementing standard fMRI steps, (b) significant room for improvement with regards reporting (c) need methodological quantifying comparing contribution steps signal quality. Abstract Neurofeedback training has been shown to influence behavior in healthy participants as well alleviate clinical symptoms neurological, psychosomatic, and psychiatric patient populations. However, many real‐time fMRI neurofeedback studies report large inter‐individual differences learning success. The factors that cause this vast variability between remain unknown their identification could enhance treatment Thus, here we employed a meta‐analytic approach including data from 24 different with total of 401 participants, 140 patients, determine whether levels activity target brain regions during pretraining functional localizer or no‐feedback runs (i.e., self‐regulation the absence neurofeedback) predict We observed slightly positive correlation run success, but were not able identify common brain‐based success predictors across our diverse cohort studies. Therefore, advances need be made finding robust models measures general learning, increasing current study database allow for investigating further might learning.

Amygdala activity dysregulation plays a central role in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hence learning to self-regulate one's amygdala may facilitate recovery. PTSD is further characterized by abnormal contextual processing related the traumatic memory. Therefore, provoking personal narrative while training down-regulation could enhance clinical efficacy. We report results of randomized controlled trial (NCT02544971) novel self-neuromodulation procedure (i.e. NeuroFeedback) for PTSD, aimed at down-regulating limbic receiving feedback from an auditory script narrative. To scale-up applicability, neural was probed fMRI-informed EEG model activity, termed Electrical Finger-Print (AmygEFP). Fifty-nine adults meeting DSM-5 criteria were between three groups: Trauma-script interface (Trauma-NF) or Neutral (Neutral-NF), and control group No-NF (to spontaneous recovery). Before immediately after 15 NF sessions patients blindly assessed symptoms underwent one session fMRI-NF transferability testing. Follow-up assessment performed 3- 6-months following treatment. Patients both groups learned volitionally down-regulate AmygEFP signal demonstrated greater reduction improved during fMRI-NF, compared group. The Trauma-NF presented largest immediate improvement. This proof-of-concept study indicates feasibility AmygEFP-NF process-driven as scalable intervention illustrates its potential. Further investigation warranted elucidate contribution beyond exposure placebo effects.
