Gamma rhythms are commonly observed in many brain regions during both waking and sleep states, yet their functions mechanisms remain a matter of debate. Here we review the cellular synaptic underlying gamma oscillations outline empirical questions controversial conceptual issues. Our main points as follows: First, gamma-band rhythmogenesis is inextricably tied to perisomatic inhibition. Second, short-lived typically emerge from coordinated interaction excitation inhibition, which can be detected local field potentials. Third, rhythm concurs with irregular firing single neurons, network frequency varies extensively depending on mechanism. To document oscillations, efforts should made distinguish them mere increases power and/or increased spiking activity. Fourth, magnitude oscillation modulated by slower rhythms. Such cross-frequency coupling may serve couple active patches cortical circuits. Because ubiquitous nature strong correlation "operational modes" circuits, continue provide important clues about neuronal population dynamics health disease.

Synchronous rhythms represent a core mechanism for sculpting temporal coordination of neural activity in the brain-wide network. This review focuses on oscillations cerebral cortex that occur during cognition, alert behaving conditions. Over last two decades, experimental and modeling work has made great strides elucidating detailed cellular circuit basis these rhythms, particularly gamma theta rhythms. The underlying physiological mechanisms are diverse (ranging from resonance pacemaker properties single cells to multiple scenarios population synchronization wave propagation), but also exhibit unifying principles. A major conceptual advance was realization synaptic inhibition plays fundamental role rhythmogenesis, either an interneuronal network or reciprocal excitatory-inhibitory loop. Computational functions synchronous cognition still matter debate among systems neuroscientists, part because notion regular oscillation seems contradict common observation spiking discharges individual neurons highly stochastic far being clocklike. However, recent findings have led framework goes beyond conventional theory coupled oscillators reconciles apparent dichotomy between irregular neuron field potential oscillations. From this perspective, plethora studies will be reviewed involvement long-distance neuronal coherence cognitive such as multisensory integration, working memory, selective attention. Finally, implications abnormal discussed they relate mental disorders like schizophrenia autism.

Abstract Over the last quarter century, dominant tendency in comparative cognitive psychology has been to emphasize similarities between human and nonhuman minds downplay differences as “one of degree not kind” (Darwin 1871). In present target article, we argue that Darwin was mistaken: profound biological continuity animals masks an equally discontinuity minds. To wit, there is a significant which are able approximate higher-order, systematic, relational capabilities physical symbol system (PSS) (Newell 1980). We show this symbolic-relational pervades nearly every domain cognition runs much deeper than even spectacular scaffolding provided by language or culture alone can explain. propose representational-level specification where animals' abilities PSS similar they differ. conclude suggesting recent symbolic-connectionist models shed new light on mechanisms underlie gap
